12a elk

I saw 2 bull elk in 12a this weekend.. Was surprising. Wish I had the tag at the time

Cool! I'm pretty sure that season isopen now, too. Not saying it hasn't happened, but I have yet to hear of anyone killing one up there.

Does the photo look like that because of the extreme zoom or did you use a creative filter on it?

I used extreme zoom on that one. Here is another shot. I think the 12a elk tag is open until October.

If you don't mind saying where about were you in the unit? I have seen old droppings but never set eyes on a live one yet. The droppings I found were in the mid-range around south-lake.

Very cool! Still over 550 leftover tags available for that hunt. For only $48, might be worth a camping trip up there!

I think it's only $35 for the permit now. Still like trying to find the proverbial needle in the haystack, tho.

The tag is $35 but i think the AZGFD still charges an app fee for both R & NR so tags cost $48 or $50 depending on resident status.

Hmmm. Easy tag, but tough hunting odds. Maybe I've got it all wrong with the hard tag, better hunting odds! Getting to "hunt " 12a for 50 bucks?

If they want those elk dead why not make a new rule that an elk up there is treated like a coyote and as long as you have a hunting license you can shoot on site?

Yeah, its $48 with the tag fee. Still would be a camping trip rather than a hunting trip... lol. It's pure luck too find them.

The permit is $35, and I'm pretty sure you do not pay an app fee unless you have applied during a draw. OTC leftovers are tag fee only.

From the 2021 regs:

Note 39 – Units 12A, 12B, 13A, and 13B have an extremely low-density elk population, less than 50 elk combined for all four units. These units are specifically
managed for wildlife values other than elk, and an established elk population is not desirable. The intent of this hunt is to eliminate this elk population. The
cost of the tag has been reduced to $35 to help achieve this objective. The Department cautions you that due to extremely low elk densities, hunt success
will be very low, likely less than 5%. If you apply for this hunt during the draw, you will almost certainly draw it, which will cause you to lose your bonus
points. If you pick up one of these tags during the first come-first served process your bonus points will not be affected.

That's for one who APPLIES -- as in fills out & mails in an application to be processed -- for a leftover, as I said. Note the APPLICATION DEADLINE at the top of the page! That horse has left the barn a long time ago.

It doesn't apply NOW for PICKING UP one of the 500 availble OVER THE COUNTER at a G&F office. It's then no different than if you were purchasing a lion permit.

Was there with a buddy for his Turkey hunt a few weeks ago. On the way up I bragged how many turkeys and deer we would see since he has never hunted in Az before. Upon arrival, as usual the deer greeted us at every corner. I explained there was no elk up in the unit and it helped with the deer population. Day one of the hunt, we come across 6 elk and a Bobcat. I was stunned, as I have NEVER seen elk there. Hopefully headed back up Thursday!

If you want to get one of these tags you still have to go to AZGFD office and pick one up, they will have you fill out an application with the hunt number and you will pay $48.

Okay, I give. You guys are corect. I just called one of my contacts for clarification.

The reason the app fee is tacked on to those tags is because they are still considered PERMIT hunts instead of like the Non-Permit population control type hunts.

Far south end on the east side. Look for tanks right along the park boundary.
