105 & 106 Deer?????

This is really three questions. I found out I drew a 51-9 tag for elk. I already know about the wilderness and Grizzly's. But I have some questions on deer since I'll be there anyway.

1. Since 51-9 falls in unit 105 & 106 Region F I was thinking of getting a deer tag as a second choice since I'll be there anyway. How's the Muley population there? I'm more concerned with numbers not trophy potential.

2. If I get the tag and don't connect on a buck during archery I believe I can come back and hunt rifle season correct?

3. Lastly, I've done some research on the elk tag but could always use more info if anyone is willing to share on that area.

Any feedback on the deer or elk or both is highly appreciated.

Give it some time and if mightyhunter or nhf see you post they can probably help you out. mh lives over at Clark right in the area you're asking about and nhf lives over by Powell not that far east of your area and gets up in there on his job.

Top Gun,
Thanks for the response. Mule deer in Oregon are almost non existent anymore so if there is a fair amount of Mule Deer around I thought I might as well pick up a tag while I'm there.
Best of luck this season to you.

there was a 240" taken this year in Oregon.

There is always a big deer taken here and there in every state. I'm talking more about the population in general. I was born and raised in Central Oregon and have lived in Oregon my whole life 50 years now. The Muley situation here is dire IMO but that is another topic.
Thanks for your feedback.

You got the Oregon deer thing right.

I've never been in the exact area you're talking about but a couple years ago I hunted sheep in area 4 south of there in September. I've never spent time in country with so few deer. I saw more griz than deer and that's a fact not an exaggeration. did see lots of elk.

I'd really do my homework before I burnt very many deer points is what I'm saying I guess.

Thanks for the feedback Ochoco Kid, I wouldn't burn any deer point as I have 11 but would do it as a 2nd choice special tag. I don't drink or play golf or like fancy cars. I just hunt so don't mind spending a little extra if there are average deer populations around. But if there are that few I may think twice.
Good luck to you this year.

I'd see if anyone has been in your area specifically before I gave up. but I don't think most of that country is know for great deer numbers for many big bucks.

Not many deer anywhere around the park where I've been actually. obviously the wolves don't help but there must be more to it than that. I just don't know.

Good Point Ochoco Kid I was in Yellowstone a couple of years ago and didn't see much for deer. Before I throw in the tool though I'll do a little more research and see if anyone else has any input.

If mightyhunter doesn't respond on this thread in the near future, I would suggest you go to one of his posts and click on the envelope icon so you can send him an email that he'll probably answer if his inbox accepts it. I think that unit you have the elk tag for is known as a hit and miss migratory area for deer where you either see a ton of deer from one spot for a few days that are passing through or nothing.

Thanks Top Gun I'll do that, I'm actually leaning toward doing it since if I'm not mistaken I can go back and hunt the rifle season also. Appreciate the advice, if he doesn't respond then I'll shot him a message. Good luck to you this year.

I have posted quite a bit on deer areas 105 and 106. 106 is mostly a migration hunt for mule deer. It can be hit or miss. Last year, I thought it was a miss. Some early September snow may have been part of the problem. Some think there was a deer winter kill from the previous year. I didn't see any indication of that. My son ate his F tag after seeing nothing but a few small bucks in late October in 106. In 2017, I took the smallest 4x4 I have taken in over 10 years. That buck was shot in the North Fork area just before the season closed.

105 has more resident deer including whitetails and mule deer. Most of the mule deer in 105 are what I would describe as "spindly horned ranch bucks". However, there may be a few decent bucks in the area along the edge of the plateau. I think the biggest mule deer I ever took in 105 was a 150 or so 4x4. He was running with about a dozen other bucks and mine was the big boy in the bunch. I have seen good bucks in 105 but this is usually in November and December.

You can PM if you want some specifics about deer and elk hunting in the area. I live in Area 105.

Mightyhunter,

Thanks for the feedback, I have some maps on order and want to make sure I don't waste your time so as soon as they come in I will PM you. I appreciate your insight and willingness to help. This is mainly an archery elk hunt for me so I'm not looking for a trophy buck just thought a deer tag would be nice to have if a average three point stepped out in front of me and any excuse to come back to Wyoming in the rifle season is a good one. Maps should be here soon and I'll reach back out.
