Congrats MJ. I'm glad you found his sheds.

Duck, That buck in the bottom right with the G2 that kicks back is awesome. It looks like the smaller one is newer then the bigger one. Did he just regress?

Congrats again on a great day guys.

Nice sheds,

MJ, were they in the same general area you were seeing him or did he travel aways and shed them.

i hope he's a 'little excited'.....i'm excited, and all i get to do is look at'em. great job, fellas, congratulations....

Thanks guys. He was across the highway and right on the edge of my friend's property, we found one side, and Shad pointed out a trail that led back to where I'd originally seen him a couple times (all during the day). Seems that at night, he'd cross the highway and come feed in the nearby orchards. I was sure excited. Sorry about the cheesy smile though.

It was kind of cool, we met some guys that were working the orchard and they had some sheds that they gave to us. All in all we found a little over half I think. It was awesome, and my legs are sure tightening up from walking!

Shad, I still have your radio. I tried calling you on my way home but it never rang, just went straight to your voicemail. Here are some pictures of him still packing that I have:

Great set of sheds man, and congrats on finally finding them.

I have a question about why I only get a red X on your pictures. What format are they in. I can see the pictures of the buck still packing but not the shed pictures?

Great day of shed hunting! I sit at work and wish I could be out there scouring the slopes. Michael congrats at finally locating your buck and duck once again great pics. Pure jealousy here! Put a tape on those I would love to see what they score. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks guys, it was quite a day. I might be able to get ahold of my B&C scorer friend and get them scored. I'm just curious to see what kind of width do you guys think he has? Remember to include that little 1" cheater on his right side.

Dear mountain man MJ,
next time you and "duck" go out get ahold of me. I have looked for this buck alot this year, I was looking harder then a fat chick on a lost potato chip.

MJ, didn't you say your friend had one side of this buck from last year? Didn't he find both sides from the year before that? Have you put all the antlers together yet? He's probably glad you found them instead of some one else.

Well, me and my friends have quite a history with this buck (for this year anyways). Yes my friend found his NT side last year (he has regressed some this year. Cheaters aren't as long, and his front fork was much bigger last year), and found the matched set the year before. I've only been aware of this buck since November of '05 while my friend has watched him the last 3 years. IMO the last two years he's been more impressive that the year before last. So basically, my buddy has been looking high and low for this buck for about the last 5 weeks. I as well have been out a couple times looking for them all to no avail. We were all pretty positive that someone had picked them up already.

However, when I found these and informed my buddies, they got pretty pissed and thought I was lying about where I found them. They either thought that I was lying about where I found them, or that Shad found them awhile ago, and just gave them to me. I took the sheds down to his house lastnight and showed him. I might be hooking up with him later today to show him where I found these.

It sucks because I've been called a "Liar" numerous times in the past 48 hours and it's gotten a little old. None of it has been to my face, but word gets around pretty quick. I can see why Shad is not posting anymore pics because people are taking this stuff WAY too seriously.

Shwing, who are you and where are you from? Just curious.

MichaelJ- it would be awesome if you could get a pic of your sheds and the other guys sheds all layed out to see the differences in the years. I have a couple deer i have the sheds off of like 3 years in a row and its really neat to see them that way. Just a thought. especially if your buddy isnt to happy and you wont see his sheds very much it might be good to get a pic. Did ya ever put a tape on him?? if you need help scoring let me know i could help ya. Anyways great pics and its an awesome feeling when you spotted those bad boys huh??? :)

Garrett,
Yeah, I'll see if I can take my camera down tonight and snap a picture or two. I'll give him a call here in a little bit. I think the whole fiasco is dying down a little though. And yeah, it was amazing when I found the one side, and even better when Shad pointed out the other side. I just kept saying "Oh my God I can't believe I found these."

I also got a question for you guys. If I want to put these sheds on a plaque type mount until fall when I can afford to get a full mount done, how do I do it without the skull plate? I noticed all the "kits" down at Hooked On Toys all required skull plates.

Michael~All Gods creatures welcome... right next to the mashed potatoes and gravy.

You need to come over 2 my place i have a few that i have done and they look really well, I would tell u how but its a secret.

Too bad about the conflict. Wouldn't want to lose a friend over a couple antlers. Maybe you could let him hold onto them for awhile after you do a plack mount.

Go to Van Dykes Taxidermy website. They have nice shed mounting forms that are about $14. I've done several sets with them. You can buy a plack mounting kit and form for about $30.00 that comes with the leather and instructions. They look real profesional when done.

To be honest, if your buddy was the one that put you onto this buck and you wouldnt have found the sheds without him, then maybe you should offer him the sheds? I know that when my brother and I head out with BCBOY in some of his areas if we found a set like that we would offer them to him as we wouldnt have found them without him letting us tag along in his area. And that way there is no hard feelings going around. BCBOY also lets us shed hunt some of the areas he's shown us and if i ever picked up a big shed i would straight up give it to him, its his shed hunting spot so i just think thats the right thing to do.

I know its a tough thing to do but then again its alot better than pissing one of your good buddies off!

Now You need to draw a permit for the unit you found the buck in and get him next year. Then your friend will really be pissed.

Greeat job, and don't let the "politics" steal from your find.
There are shed mounting plates that work great. You attach the antler then adjust it to your likeing. I think deer is about $40 bucks, but that isn't even a tank of gas if you think about it. Reasearch mannikins sells them. Check it out online, or shoot me an e-mail or PM and I can help you with it. I have the catalog with ordering number etc. Whats really nice about them is that you can adjust it to be perfect to your liking. Since you have before pics, you can make the mount just the same. I can shoot you a pic on how it looks if interested or want more details. It makes it into a "skullplate" and then fits perfectly into any form, so very easy for taxidermist, and is steel so won't break or come loose during the process. So far I've used one for elk, couple whities and a mulie. I am jealous of you though. GREAT FIND! Not a chessey smile....says it like it is. Damn happy but in shock at the same time.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tell Shad to feel free and leave at least one shed out there for me would ya. : )

MattB,
My buddy didn't turn me onto this buck. We all watched him during christmas break and then around January I think he moved up to a different spot to spend the winter. One day during my break in school I hiked into the area and saw the buck. After that I kept tabs on him. He didn't drop in the area that he was hanging out in, so I honestly don't feel like I owe it to him for neither putting me onto the buck, or telling me where to find his sheds. Besides, we're all a little competitive about finding sheds, and we usually won't tell eachother where a big buck is hiding unless it's common knowledge. WE've all looked high/low for these things and I was just lucky enough to find 'em that's all.

Shad, I'll give you a call and I might stop by and check out ur mounts that you have. I'd love to see them.

Michael~All Gods creatures welcome... right next to the mashed potatoes and gravy.

Sounds to me like they are definetely your sheds then, post a pic of the mount when/if you get around to it! Also congrats on the awesome find!

Michael,
Sweet Sheds dude!!!! Congrats on a great find!!!

My shed huntin' buddy and I are also quite competitive with each other. We've got multiple years of sheds off several deer. One winter he found a nice 180 class typical that we watched for a bit. He went in there several times in the spring looking and came home empty. I figured I'd give it a try and ended up finding the matched set in only a couple of hours of looking. :) The next winter that buck was back and better than ever. He put on a ton of growth. I watched and filmed him several times that winter. My buddy never did see him. That spring, the day before I was planning on going in there to look for his sheds, my buddy found the matched set. The buck scored 211 NT. My buddy really rubbed it in that he got in there before me. He lets me hold them every now and then. :)

Best to keep in mind that bone is just bone. Nothing important. Friendship has a much higher value. MattB and his brother Steve have come shed hunting in my hidey holes and the whole focus is to have fun. I told them I get to keep anything big, but thus far they haven't found anything I want. :) :)

Craig-

The unit that he is in is probably one of the tougher units to hunt here in central wa. There is a lot of country and not a lot of roads as compared to some of the other late hunt areas around here. That unit that he probably lives in has produced some monster deer, this year during the general rifle season a lady took a buck that grossed in the low 190's and then back in either '02 or '03 there was a monster typical that grossed right around 197.

BCBOY, our family gets the same way about shed hunting...VERY competitive and most of it's in good fun but it has turned nasty over the years. My unwritten rule is that if I have a buck pinned down I'm not telling anybody and I would expect my friends to allow me to try and get the horns, if it's a common knowledge buck that everybody knows about(MichaelJ's case) than it's every man for himself I would say. Literally hundreds of guys in the valley knew that deer was there. Example: I went with a cousin this weekend that was literally targeting one buck and has probably thought about this buck for the last two months straight... I and nobody else friends or family knew of the deer... to make a long story short we hooked up on the set and I gave him my side of the horn(it was more than a mile away in thick country)... it seems only right and I would hope the same in return. Shed hunting is fun and competition is fun but a guy needs to be able to separate the two, it's more fun just being out with friends. By the way, we jumped around like a bunch of high school cheerleaders when we realized it was a set.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-12-06 AT 02:13PM (MST)[p]Hey were is the pics, all I get is red x's, this has gone over board, oh ya by the way went out today, I scored on a crap load of sheds and one nice 3 point set. I saw 9 other rigs out and about most of them were shed hunters , its getting kinda crazy around here!

Wish I could sit on a buck and know I could pick up his sheds. That rarely ever happens. I watch a ton of bucks over the winter that I will never find the sheds off of. It ain't a matter of other shed hunters pickin' them up either. It's that the place is so darn thick I'll walk over them for years and not even know it.

Well, if you noticed in the pics there were two old sheds that had the back G2's drop down instead of going up. Turns out my buddy had the matched set to the side from last year. I threw it in my car, went down and met him and saw they were a set so I gave him the shed from this year. They are after all just bone, and it's pretty exciting to find a big matched set, but I would give up these horns in a second if I knew that it would destroy some friendships.

Shad, hey man I'm sending you an email. Let me know when you get it. I might give you a call later today to possibly come down and see how you mounted your sheds.

Lowedog, I tried calling you yesterday but no one was home. I'll try to give you a call possibly sometime today.

Hey guys, I started a guessing thread in the Mule Deer section for the score. Check it out.
