LAST EDITED ON Jan-31-05 AT 11:48AM (MST)[p]well hes not the biggest moose on the mountain but what a thrill. When i drew i told myself since this is once in a lifetime i really wanted to kill a moose with my bow even if he wasnt huge.I hunted hard all the month of september and finally I spotted this bull and a cow several drainages over one evening. By the time i got to where they were of course they were gone. I started tracking them and eventually saw the cow in a small opening about 70yrds away. I started to call and immediatly heard brush breaking behind her.Having never hunted moose or called them i wasnt shure what to do so i waited and called every couple minutes. Eventually the bull came out and started to circle me with his head down moving his head back and forth grunting, with the hair on his back standing strait up, I started to get worried hed kick my ass. At 30yrds he finally turned broadside and i tried to draw, he caught movement and turned facing me.Eventually i had to let down and he got nervous and turned to leave. so i turned my head and grunted again. Evedently he was convinced there was another moose he turned and came back by broadside 20yrds and i wacked him right through both lungs. The story doesnt end hear, i maked the spot backed out and came back two hours later with a lantern and my hunting partner. After a short blood trail we found my moose, however we saw some eyes glowing about 50yrs away and seven feet up. The cow was still with him and not happy. She came charging at us and we went running in the dark. We didnt want the meat to go bad so we yelled and threw stuff hoping she would leave. to make a long story short every fifteen minutes for the next 3 hours we would hear a freit train coming through the trees, she would run by us and we would dive for cover. We could only see obout 10ft around us from the lantern. It scared the ##### out of us until we got him cut up. We didnt pack him out that night just skinned and quartered. We made it out after one more chase and came back next morning, she was still there but once she saw us in the light she left, thank goodness. That was by far the scariest moment ive had hunting i have a new respect for moose. The bull ended up being 38inches wide.

The exact same thing happened to my buddies and I when one of them shot his moose this year. A cow and another bull wouldn't go away. The one bull would come charging every time we chopped on the downed bull.

We posted a watch and even with flash lights and head lamps they hung out for over two hours while we loaded up the bull on horses. They finally ran off as we led the horses away with the quarters hanging. It was pretty hairy and I know exactly how you feel.

Awesome story and congrats on a fine bull!

Cheers,
Pete

Its storys like that, that you get to laugh at while telling your grandkids. Pretty funny, and pretty dang scary as well.
Congrats on the big critter even if his old lady dont like you no more.

I'd rather be lucky than good.
Knifeboy.

Very respectable archery bull, hope I draw this year. I do hope if I draw I can find a bull without a psycho cow though!!(grin). I'll have to give you a call about some new Elk info I got about our zone.
