This is my 10th bull.(2nd w/my bow). He's just your standard 5pt but the hunt sure was cool. My partner & I hiked about 3 miles in during a driving rainstorm just sure we were wasting our time. When we got to our spot the rain let up & we started glassing across canyon. Spotted 5 satellite bulls that had cut a cow out from the herd. A small 6pt was chasing her around the ridge in circles & there were four 5 pts spread out just kind of waiting. The 6 was bugling his guts out but the other bulls never made a peep.
We got across & up to the middle of that ridge as fast as we could. We set up for my partner as he had never killed an elk.Gave 6 frantic cow calls & about 1 minute later I looked over my left shoulder and here was this 5pt about 15 FEET uphill from me! It never ceases to amaze me how quiet they can be! He took 3steps uphill stopped looked back giving me a perfect quartering away shot at about 20 feet. My poor hunting partner didn't have a clue till he heard my arrow slicing thru the bulls chest. ( He did get a 5pt in Nov. during muzzleloader, almost a twin to this one,so we did pop his cherry!)
Well can't wait till Sept. so we can all hit it again! Got cabin fever bad & decided this might help.
