Sheep and Goat 2024 draw statistics / recap are up on CPW website

That is awesome and definitely shows higher odds for more points! This is showing about a 5 to 1 odds ratio from 20 points to 1 point. In a true bonus point system, wouldn't you expect for the line to be steeper, closer to 20 to 1 on a ratio (like 10% for 20 points and 0.5% for 1 point)? Maybe...

    Resident helping NR hunt wilderness

Doesn't seem clear cut if a paid guide would get a ticket but a resident guide wouldn't. Why is that different?

TRW joint committee to take up preference to bonus point issue

For all non-resident sheep tags it is a bonus system because there is never more than one, each point gives you one more chance in the draw. For residents, it is 50/50 preference and bonus. Odds are definitely better the more points you have, that is not debatable. I don't even know what we...

Female tags. Big money for a ewe.

Sheep and Goat 2024 draw statistics / recap are up on CPW website

You can do that math, I don't think it is going to help a ton based on the current distribution of who drew tags and how many people are applying with few points. I agree it would be simpler and more fair but it is probably not going to help much for those sitting on loads of points. I think...

TRW joint committee to take up preference to bonus point issue

Look at the resident side and it is a very different situation. The bonus tags are actually preference tags and the the regular tags are actually bonus tags and it is working okay. Just not enough tags for non- res.
  8. nripepi

TRW joint committee to take up preference to bonus point issue

Better read the fine print! If more than 1 tag, they go preference.
  9. nripepi

TRW joint committee to take up preference to bonus point issue

That is definitely not true. Plenty of hunts use preference points but you need to have at least two available tags. If you are talking about Desert Bighorn then that is correct.
  10. nripepi

TRW joint committee to take up preference to bonus point issue

Utah is 50% preference and 50% bonus. The poster said they go bonus if there is only 1 tag and as you both mentioned it could go to anyone and unlikely will go to the max points applicant.

Not for sheep, moose and goat. A bonus point it is and it is under debate.

TRW joint committee to take up preference to bonus point issue

Debatable I guess. Depends how many points you have. Everyone in Colorado with lots of points want to change it from bonus to preference....

He might not have. $1000 in points could of happened in 5 years or less.

TRW joint committee to take up preference to bonus point issue

Okay, we all know that. The question is if they change to bonus points from preference points, do I get "exactly what I paid for" or not?

What? I agreed with you. I am sure the price increase on special last year already covered it.

TRW joint committee to take up preference to bonus point issue

We have been told for years, including in the 90/10 push, that non resident preference point money doesn't matter. It can be replaced easily. It is a non-issue, a drop in the bucket.
  17. nripepi

TRW joint committee to take up preference to bonus point issue

You do feel differently though and stated as much last year that it should stay at least 50% preference as it wouldn't be fair.

    Resident helping NR hunt wilderness

What happens if they don't retrieve all edible meat? Do they both get fined or just the NR? If both, then I think the resident needs to be with the meat until it crosses the line. If just the NR gets fined, then I guess the res can go on their merry way after the kill.
  19. nripepi

TRW joint committee to take up preference to bonus point issue

23 sheep and moose points and I am in my 40s. I just don't understand the big push to change it. Maybe going from 75/25 to 50/50 would be reasonable.
  20. nripepi

TRW joint committee to take up preference to bonus point issue

When you are charging $100-150 per point for a preference point for 15+ years, I just don't see why people (myself included) should have understood that the system would go away in 25 years. I don't know, I know I am bias based on my stockpiling points and planning, but this just doesn't sit...

TRW joint committee to take up preference to bonus point issue

I said they shouldn't. It is plain not fair. Why does everyone want to change everything? What is your main reason for wanting change? Residents don't have points for most species. Residents have 25% random on the big 2 and random on everything else. Non-res have so few sheep tags, why make a...

How many points do you and your family have? Have you already waited in line and got tags? Are you a resident or non-resident? All these answers shape your point of view. It is okay to have different points of view. Mine are shaped based on having a lot of preference points that I believe were...

    PP/BP or random

What if you make it 50/50 preference/random for residents and 50/50 preference/bonus for non-residents so you sell more expensive points to non-residents because of the bonus option.

TRW joint committee to take up preference to bonus point issue

He bought a preference point not a bonus point and that is the issue. The website talks about preference points dozens of times and no where does it say a thing about bonus points. It goes into detail on explaining how preference points work, you can't just change them from preference to bonus...

TRW joint committee to take up preference to bonus point issue

I know a few non-residents well outside of a tag that are thinking they will change it to Bonus Points so staying in a bit longer in case they do. Others have disposable income and don't realize their points are worthless with the current systems and keep getting them. Then there are the ones...

And you think Utah non residents are the issue

Yes, but what if he is a hunter or a guide or outfitter? Would it be about hunting then? Just curious really. Definitely sheds a bad image on hunters as he most likely is a hunter even thought this has nothing to do with hunting.

In the same boat with 23. Just waiting for a better unit and for my kids to grow up. Shouldn't be penalized for that after paying for decades. If they go 50/50 Preference and Bonus most could live with that and would avoid a lawsuit. Not saying who would win such a lawsuit but I am sure it would...

    Red Desert Pronghorn 80”+

Okay Buzz, don't laugh, show data they don't shrink. Most are significant, 2 to 4 inches on many, especially if you freeze them and loose moisture.

    Red Desert Pronghorn 80”+

Antelope notoriously shrink a lot. I am guessing he was 3 inches bigger when you shot him and at 60 days probably would have made the awards. We're his horns in the freezer much?

    Early snow question

I think this theory is based on October hunts when that is when the season was open. In October, some big bucks will definitely stay high and wait until November to migrate down.

    Early snow question

Easier to see the deer with snow and often better overall movement with cooler weather. Can get the bucks to start sniffing around more as well and if enough snow it will push them out of the timber down lower into more visible terrain. Interested to see what others think about reverse migration...

Someone willing to talk about CO

If you would have applied for a tag that started after his birthday he would have got a point if he didn't draw it. Did the same thing last year for a 11 year old.
