    San Juan abajo/Monticello area help

I had a buddy that came with me. We knew it might rain, but were not prepared for what hit Friday night! got dumped on. Had lightning hit right next to us. We were under a pop-up canopy on cots. Ended up spending the night in my truck. Not pleasant. Nearby camp had a tons of hounds with them...

    San Juan abajo/Monticello area help

Thanks for the thoughts. I've called and texted my neighbor numerous times. He's responded for months that he's going to supply me with information, but hasn't...which is why I'm here. There's a chance that he still will, but I'm looking at other sources of information just in case. I don't...

    San Juan abajo/Monticello area help

Only ever hunted Pine Valley for mule deer in the last 5-6 years as I live in St. George. Not had success. I had a neighbor encourage me last fall to put in for San Juan Abajo Mtns as he's familiar with the area and offered to help. He ended up moving away recently. I've been trying frantically...

    Herriman archery hunt

That's such a hard thing for me to recognize. I've always been taught to get away from people as much as possible. It makes sense...if there are deer, there are going to be lots of people. I just need to get that through my thick head

    Herriman archery hunt

Thanks. I was up here a couple weeks ago. Tried to go up there. It was closed. Talked to a hunter who had walked past the gate early in the morning. Said he didn't see much. Maybe it's open again and maybe they've moved in there more...and maybe there's also 900 people in there?

    Herriman archery hunt

Thanks. I'm not looking to be spoon fed, although I wouldn't complain ?. I'm willing to do the work, but the Wasatch front is a HUGE amount of country. Im notorious for choosing places that hold no deer, at least in southern Utah. With only one shot, I just want to make sure I'm generally in the...

    Herriman archery hunt

Are you suggesting trying somewhere other than herriman? I'll have one chance (if I can get out at all) so I want to go to a place with high probability of getting into something. That may not be realistic...

    Herriman archery hunt

reviving this post. Anyone been up in the public area this month? I am up from St. George for the holiday staying at my in-laws. I was hoping to hunt near emmigration this morning, but that didn't work out. for the rest of our stay, I don't think I can make it over on the east side of the...

    Extended archery deer

Went up 2 weeks ago. Hard to compete with people that live up there, know the area...and that do this "professionally" (with radios, lots of eyes, video equipment, and a following)

2022 Trophy Bucks - Pack Giveaway

I can share all the sunrise and sunset pics I took hunting about 30 days this year. That's all I've got to show for my time out. The bucks ghosted me :(

    Extended archery deer

I appreciate the input. Are these areas I should expect to hike a couple hours to get to a good location? Just trying to make plans on how to tackle this if I can make it up. Thinking maybe end of next week and/or around Thanksgiving as it looks like we may be headed up that way for the holiday.

That's good to know. Thanks. I'm familiar with the cities up north, but not the wilderness areas much.

    Extended archery deer

Thanks. There's so much approved country I didn't want to go to an area that everyone else knows has no deer this time of year. Follow up question...when I'm hiking into an area I plan to glass/hunt, I will often hike in the dark to be at my spot at first light. Should I be doing that on these...

    Extended archery deer

I'm in southern utah. Went 0-3 for dedicated hunter when the rifle season just ended. I was ready to be done till i saw a decent buck pop out at last light 750 yards away and heading away from me. Never turned for a shot. The sighting re-lit the fire to keep after it. There are only two small...

    Pine Valley Mule Deer

well, I wish luck wasn't such a big part of it. I have hiked countless miles, was out more days that I want to count and ended the my second year of dedicated the way I ended my first...with a tag still in my pocket. I wanted something more than a barely forked buck. I wasn't holding out for...

    Pine Valley Mule Deer

I've passed on a lot of tiny 2 points in hopes they'll get a chance to grow. I hate tag soup, but care about the future. I don't know how many I've let go just to hear shots not too far after. Its sad.

    Pine Valley Mule Deer

You lucked out. that is bigger than anything I've seen all season and bigger than what most people I've talked to have seen. I've come across hundreds and hundreds of does. a few small 2 points and thats it.

    Pine Valley Mule Deer

I've talked to quite a few guys who said they quit hunting 4-5 years ago because number of deer dropped real bad and the hunters were everywhere. They talked about spending lots of time hauling salt blocks, building blinds far from roads just to have some yahoo come bombing up the mountain on a...

    Pine Valley Mule Deer

I wish I had better news. I'm not saying there aren't decent bucks out there. I heard a few people said they saw a small 4 or medium 3 point from a long distance in the Pine Valley Wilderness area. I've had others tell me there are small 3 and 4 point bucks near new castle, at certain times near...

    Pine Valley Mule Deer

well, just a follow up...i've been lots more places I've never hunted before just to try and cover more ground and following suggestions of people I've spoken to. Seen more does, an occasional forked young guy, but nothing more than a small two point with twigs for antlers. I let them go hoping...

    Pine Valley Mule Deer

thanks for sharing your experience. I guess the good I can take away is maybe I'm not doing as terrible as I think at learning how to hunt. The bad is, it doesn't sound like I can do much differently to change my outcome.

    Pine Valley Mule Deer

thanks for the response. I'm trying to learn what they like. I started hunting about 4-5 years ago so I'm trying to absorb as much learning as I can. I'm clearly doing something wrong at this point

    Pine Valley Mule Deer

I know this thread is a couple years old. Things change, but after doing all I can think of last year and this year with no success, I'm doing more internet searching to try and find some other information that might help. I'm in my second year of dedicated hunter in the pine valley unit. I...
