I've hunted Colorado since 2002. I've missed a few seasons here or there, but I've hunted 16 out of 22 years.
I've seen some big deer, at least big in my opinion, but never had an opportunity during season.
I've always been pleased with having the option to hunt even if it was a second or third choice tag. I would rather have the tradition of hunting every year.
Sometimes these units and hunts take some time to figure them out. The deer may be high, or they may move during the week, seems it always something.
Looking back I've taken a 4 point buck 7 out of the last 9 years. 4 out of the last 5 have been on Thursday of the rifle season.
This year when we headed out for the afternoon hunt I told my hunting buddy that it was my lucky day, Thursday!
Little did i know that 30 minutes later I would be standing over a fine muley that I would gladly take any year!
We had hunted high and low, and spent the morning glassing at 10k, but something told me that some bucks should have moved into some blm parcels found down low.
As we headed into one parcel on foot we jumped some deer in the junipers. We separated with a plan to parallel each other, less than 4 minutes later this buck was staring at me. I brought my rifle up and took the offhand shot at 50 yards. Due to the tree branches I wasn't sure how good he was, but I had seen enough through the scope to pull the trigger. He didn't go 10 feet.
I am very pleased with this buck from a second choice tag. (Any tag for that matter!)
First time a buck grew once he hit the ground for me. That's a nice feeling!
