I started taking my son hunting with me when he was a toddler, literally. First hunt was spring turkeys at 2 1/2 years old, then ducks at 3. His first out of state trip was at 7, a Wyoming deer & antelope hunt. He started shooting birds, mostly ducks and spring turkeys, when he was 9. His first game animal was a Wyoming pronghorn when he was 12…. With a bow! Now, he’s 36 and we’ve enjoyed some great hunts together over the years, both across the western states as well as 3 African hunts together; he loves hunting Cape Buffalo with me.
Yesterday, we started the next generation in our tradition. My son brought his 2 year old daughter with us for an evening deer hunt near our home. He took her without me the evening before and they enjoyed some daddy-daughter time. He shot a coyote and she was good, so we took her again last night. It’s been a long time since I hunted with a passenger in a car seat! It went well, my son shot a nice buck and she wanted to touch it and pose in the pictures. I think we have a new hunter!
