Colorado Bull

My youngest son drew a 1st season tag for SW Colorado this year. He has several other tags but he was most excited for the chance to kill his first bull. We have sent some time in the units he could hunt but it was always late season for deer. We got some valuable info from a few guys which made the difference on such a short season.

We were into elk the first day but no legal bulls were spotted. The morning of day two were again in the elk but with the thick trees it was tough to get on anything. We decided to take a break and make a game plan for the rest of the day. Around 9:45 a bull rips a bugle just below us in the canyon we looking over. It was really hot and I was surprised to hear a bull so late in the morning. I got my son set up and told hunt to be ready. Within a minute or two some cows started working their way through the aspens below us at 510 yards. Weston was watching each one come through the opening when the bull came through chasing a cow. He said “dad stop him”. I let out a cow call and the bull stopped in the opening. I could see he was a legal bull and I told Weston to just squeeze. The bull dropped in his tracks and the celebration began. It took the rest of the day and the next morning to get him all packed out but the smile on my sons face made it all worth it.
