Proposition 131?

Good question. In theory it sounds good I fear that in practice it will be disastrous. It is kind of an obtuse bill that leaves a lot to be clarified. Because of that I’m out. In my simple mind this type of open primary could leave a lot of nefarious “fixing” to help parties gain and maintain total control, therefore completely eliminating any choice.
 
I am a non partisan. Nevada has a similar ballot measure this year. Although I have a severe distaste for parties, I still voted no on our measure. I really don't understand how it would all work, so erred on the side of caution.
 
It sounds like some is not happy with the way things are presently, not sure which party is behind this? So for me, it is more of a reason to vote no, if it makes someone uncomfortable, then the present system must be working.
 
My research implied that both parties are against it.

I think it could work but maybe not in present form? I am tired of the 2 party lockhold. Because radicals on both sides seem to have too much clout.

This is true, yet. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out how parties could organize and cast votes un-electable candidates to stack the deck in their favor… we see it in advertising here in Co. Dems will spend money getting a super far right republican to win the primary since they will easily lose the general election

It appears to me who is harmed most by this measure is the major parties (the commercial entity). There is essentially zero change to the voters opportunity to vote for the major party candidates.

I can imagine several scenarios where this could break the Democrat stranglehold on state government. None of the above might actually win an office.

Am I wrong?

I have a friend from work that was in the TV commercial supporting it here. I asked him why I should vote for it and he said "Oh I'm not sure I'm voting for it, I just have a friend with a studio production company and he asked me to be in the commercial"

I only vote yes on measures if it's overwhelmingly a good thing.

I hope that more measures failing slows the number of bad ones like the cat hunting one.

I also rarely sign the petitions. I can't remember one I have signed.
 
I like the concept. But if you only vote for 1, you don’t get to vote in the runoff? Or did I read that wrong.

Thing is I had someone explain it better to me today at work, so if candidate A doesn’t get more than 50% of the the vote, then candidate D is eliminated, then they move votes to the remaining candidates and re tabulate, and so on and so forth… seems confusing as all heck and isn’t outlined well. Ranked choice seems like a weird way to solve this problem of not enough parties

You don't want more parties. In Europe they have elections without a majority and make backroom deals to decide who will lead the government.

And, I remember something like 17 Prime Minister changes in 10 years in Italy 15 or 20 year ago.

In Spain 5 or so years ago they had 3 elections a few months apart because no one could get a majority.

Only if your guy didn’t win. If your guy gets eliminated in the first pass, then your vote goes to YOUR next choice. Rinse and repeat until someone wins with at least 50%.

The main downside is it adds some cost to election administration. Nothing a few more $ on NR tags won’t fix, although it will be paid for through increased business filing fees;)

I’m looking for a reason to not like this. I haven’t found it yet, but I am a little confused about why it won’t apply to district attorney elections :censored:

I couldn’t care less how many parties there are. I’m for anything that will give us better candidates. I think I still suffer from Bobertitis.

About time these dummies started thinking for themselves.

I would be curious to hear from others who live where there are ranked choice elections.

Well, the left likes it in Alaska, but it could also backfire in areas that are already left in favor of right centrists as well.

But no question the left is very well funded wherever they decide to make a play.
