Hi Blueoak. I drew one of bear valley tags this year. The western boundary of the unit has been moved to cache creek ridge. Curious if you have any pointers or insight? Going to start my scouting first weekend in August.I own the ranch east of hwy 16 that use to be a part of that property. I also leased that whole ranch for the ten years prior to it becoming public ground and know it like the back of my hand. Since the rocky fire the elk have change up their movements and a lot of them stayed north of hwy 20 for a while. I can see quiet a bit of the ranch from my place and will start looking. I haven't started hunting the A-zone yet but will soon. The deer hunters will getting them moving around. The easiest ground to hunt is near cowboy camp. If you want to hunt deeper in the ranch you will need some bodies or horses to pack meat. Maybe we can get together up there some time and look at the maps.
I think blue oak may have sold the ranch he use to haveHi Blueoak. I drew one of bear valley tags this year. The western boundary of the unit has been moved to cache creek ridge. Curious if you have any pointers or insight? Going to start my scouting first weekend in August.
Unless you have access to private, focus heavily on the area where the boundary changed - the triangle between Hwy 20, Hwy 16, and Cache Creek Ridge - particularly behind Cowboy Camp off of 16.Hi Blueoak. Literally a couple hundred yards south if the hwy, when’s the hunt start? That’s good to hear. I plan on being in that area. About how far back did you see him?
Less Elk unit wide now with boundary changes. Bear Valley needed more public land. Cache Creek unit took the hit.Wish you luck.
Please explain why the boundary charge makes it harder. The maps I have seen show an increase in hunt area for 2024. Am I missing something?
Yes, i've put in some time around that area. There are elk, they love the ponds, but also the private lands around them. I've got in touch with the biologist, BLM, talked to a few locals... the majority of th elk seem to be concentrated in the usual areas. It's a big unit though with lots of Wilderness area to cover.Have you scouted the gravel yard ? Thats where I took a friend of mine to get his elk , you should look at who the biologist is , I forgot his name but if you call F&G they would give you the info you need .
