Just a heads up to anyone heading to the Bighorns for Elk or Deer. There are several road closures due to the Elk Fire. As of yesterday, 14 was closed from Dayton to Burgess Junction along with several Forest service roads. So far it looks like Unit 38 may be taking the biggest impact.

Wyoming Game & Fish is offering refunds for Unit 38-1 elk hunts. The fire must be pretty bad. Hope people stay safe.

It's getting bad. Highway opened for a short bit then closed back down. The fire jumped the Highway. I have a feeling until some good rain and snow storms come in it won't slow down.

Here is some pics. Not my pics but are being shared all over

We have tags for 39. Currently sitting in Greybull trying to figure out a plan. Hwy 14 is closed at Antelope Butte (coming from Greybull), 14A is closed at the county line, Road 14/11, with a soft closure at the winter gate coming up from Lovell.

I dont understand why they dont open the road up more. Seems to be excessive.

This going to be a wreck for hunters. with closed roads and general season a week away all the hunters will crowd the base of the mountain or head west and over crowd those units. another hard hit for the mule deer

I see the fire is getting closer to bear lodge. roughly 4 miles away as the crow flies

Man this sucks- not just the hunters impacted (sorry guys- feel real bad)- but all that good country will take a long time to recover.

nfh, this is a little confusing to me. They sent the e-mail that says 39 and 40 will be eligible for a refund then on the Bighorn Mountain Facebook page it says there moving the barricades to accommodate the hunters in Unit 40. If anyone can clarify, please feel free.

What's confusing? You can get a refund if you want or go hunting? The fire is quite a ways from making it over the top of the mtn and the wind hardly ever blows from east to west so it will burn slower going west I'd bet they will have a pretty good handle on it before it ever reaches the west side of the mtn

Decision time. Refund or hunt.

Roads are open to accommodate hunters and such. Looks like some containment is being made on the fire. Bighorns hold true to a good snow storm mid October hopefully that tradtion continues and help out the fire fighters.

Yep your correct on the snowstorms. I was in 38 with a Type 1 last year. When the snowstorm rolled in, it was a little tuff in a tent.
