It all started back in May when results were released and my 16 year old son (15 at the time) drew an archery deer tag, the only one in the family to draw a tag. Here is he at 14, after he drew a NR Utah limited entry elk hunt ( he’s had some draw success for sure at a young age).

Still shooting the same bow from 2022, poundage has increased from 50lbs to 58lbs. Here’s the blacktail he shot back home in 2023.

The area in Nevada he drew is an area I’ve never been to before so and with no time to scout, due to summer baseball. My nephew (his cousin) was gonna come along with us and help glass/assist.

the night before the opener found all three of us up high glassing for deer. We brought the side x side and had some help from some hunting pals as to where to start glassing. Sunset was spectacular, small bucks spotted and two adult mountain lions.

Sunday morning found us back in the same general area and the we located a 4x4 nontypical with inlines, and a wider typical 4x4. We watched them til about 9am and we lost the typical (don’t look away for even a second) but the inline buck was with him and he was still up. We figured the typical was bedded right there in the tall sage.

We waited until 1pm to make a play, the typical still was a no show even though the inline buck rebedded at 11. My nephew and son moved in while I watched from the tripod(s). About 2pm they made their way to 30 yards from the inline buck, and then the typical got up to feed. The boys were now actually below the typical with the thermals moving up hill. Some how, some way he didn’t catch their wind. They played cat and mouse for about 10 minutes and at 35 yards Brody made a perfect shot through the shoulder.
