My son didn’t draw the youth rifle tag this year allowing him to hunt all 3 seasons so he bought a left over archery tag for the general unit close to home. Between school and football he knew he would have little time to hunt. It was tough getting him out of bed this morning after a game last night but he did
At first light I glassed up two bucks about 500 yards out. My son snuck into some thick oaks and I kept an eye on the bucks and would text with updates of what the bucks were doing. It took about 45 minutes but they were slowly making their way towards the oak patch my boy was waiting in. The smaller of the two fed up to about 8 yards from him but there wasn’t a clear shot. The buck must have smelt him or caught movement and spooked. He drew as he spooked and made a cow call by mouth. The buck stopped broadside about 40 yards out at a spot that my son previously ranged if the deer stopped there. I heard the thwack and he made it only 50 yards after a perfect double long shot. Grateful for theses memories with my kids.
