going to try and get on this so i can push for flintlock, smooth bore,no peep, lead ball only in muzzleloader seasons just for @elkassassin

Poll:

Who thinks that too many people shoot too far and don't have the required skills?

Who has seen other hunters take obviously loong shots and miss or make poor hits(worse)?

I'm not advocating a position for/against any specific restrictions, but am simply asking, if there is a problem that is worthy of the conversation...

Sure, make sure you ride a horse out there, no vehicles allowed. If you go primitive, it’s 100 percent

2013
While I was on a Dall sheep hunt I witnessed another outfitter come into the outfitter’s territory that I was working for,

6 hunters proceeded to empty their rifles into the band of rams that we had a client on.

They shot from 1200yds+
Around 35-40rds fired by the time they were all done.😨
They managed to cripple 2 rams good enough to close the distance and dispatch them.

They also wounded 2 that made it over the ridge and disappeared.
Needless to say the state trooper came out and fines were written.
(It was pretty sickening to see)

Zero skin in Idaho’s game, I hunt Co which makes you use, loose powder, open sights, and no sabots, which guys can still stretch shots out to 300-400 yards with the right peep sight. So even going primitive, guys will still stretch it, unless you do notch and blade and side locks only people will always try to push the limits. Even then I bet guys will be throwing lead balls way past where they should

I'm going to BuzzH this topic and bow out...

Bring on the flintlocks, open sights and roundballs I say.

I think our muzzleloader rules are just about right as they are. I think the elephant in the room is infrared technology. Luepold really upping their game with an infrared spotting scope

Interesting. I didn’t know that.
Are you referring to the LTO Tracker?
Or a actual spotting scope that has more than 6x?

Yes the LTO tracker, I mean being able to go out an hr before light and glass up every animal in a basin based on its heat signature seems like tech that definitely goes beyond fair chase. I know they say it’s for locating wounded game, but all of their ads show a live elk heat signature in the images. Tell me to use it to glass animals based on heat signatures without telling me to glass animals based on heat signature

Why doesn’t the tech committee look at this case coming up in Twin Falls,t

here is plenty in this 67 page report

There’s another thread on here where a guy swears this doesn’t happen with raffle tags so I’m sure this is fake news

I’m pretty sure I’ve actually seen that helicopter…

I live in UT. now however as an Idaho native I return the gem state frequently. I have muzzeloader hunted in Ut. for over 30 years and have seen the regulations on seasons change 3 times and the restriction or lack of restriction change 5 or 6 times for front end loaders. I shot the largest deer of my life with a cival war replica 58 Cal. patched round ball, 100 grains of loose "Black Powder 2FF" #12 cap, open flip up site. Yes I was in range and had to use some hunting skills to do it. I'm all for a true "primitive" weapon season.
