E-Mail

If you want to gain some independence from the big players, you may want to look into purchasing your own domain from a provider like GoDaddy.

So you can have an email address like [email protected] with no worries about pixel tracking, cookies or other "bloat". You will have a simple interface and any amount of addresses you would like. It is your system and you own it, so you dictate what gets installed as far as additional features and functions.

These services are pretty cheap, around $6 per month

Outlook is not bad. It's the lesser evil of the bunch.

With Gmail, you just need to be ultra-vigilant about locking down your system by not allowing tracking cookies and IP-trackers. Go to google.com and search for "cottage cheese" and within an hour, you will find ads and emails for cottage cheese when you login to Gmail.

This is tracking at its finest. Also, when you receive a spam email and open it then delete it, it doesn't matter. Spammers will know you opened their message and have already harvested some information about your system (browser version, IP address, OS metadata, etc). With that info, they can then target you with more junk.

Yeah, I work in Tech and this is why I hunt...to get away from the computers whenever I can. lol

Odd…. I get none of that but maybe because it’s only on my IPhone?

Our work has some domain with outlook. Our IT has full control of it. We get zero junk.

Gotten out of hand on one aspect. Weekly phish test which are ridiculous, that's the down side. I work in Instrumentation and IT is my enemy cause I need to run my Rockwell software and their crap gets in the way. So I buy computers and bypass IT and keep it a secret from them

It's a tough balance. I used to work in that area of IT for many years. We have to protect those who can't protect themselves. Last thing any company needs is a breach or exfiltration of data because someone ran/click/executed some malicious file.

You sound like someone I wouldn't be worried about too much. If you were on my network, I would know immediately what system you were using (work or personal). I'd likely just smile as I walked by your area. We know the hard workers from those who spend too much time on the Interwebz. :)

Same with my work email.

I fully understand why they do it. We actually got hacked 2 years ago and the hacker wanted some serious cash. It's just frustrating to watch the videos and do test with know4be.

My frustration is when IT wants me have all my PLC's on the network so we can have engineers login. I said years ago if something bad happens out factory will shut down. We'll I was right. Cost us 60 grand an hour to be shut down. I suggested if they want to login let me build a SCADA system but I was speaking a language IT didn't understand

I use Yahoo with no issues. What issues does email give you? It either receives/sends emails or it doesn't?

Understood, my friend. I'll say it again, you would be the absolute least of my worries. It is the other 99% who click on the cute cat pictures or some "coupon" link in their email who make me lose sleep.

When I ran the IT team, I would force all of my System Engineers (myself included) to install the very same security software on our work computers. Empathy is one thing, but pain is best understood when you feel it.

What is this thing of 'work email'?

I've been using Proton dot com for my email. No issues, spam is only what I forgot to opt out of.

The free version is OK, but the paid version offers a bunch of different emails, some cloud storage, etc.
