Fairly new to this site, this is my first post. I have a Vernon Rifle tag. Never hunted out there for deer before, any suggestions would be appreciated. If anyone knows the unit very well, send me a PM. I have a few questions I’d like to ask. Thank you!
 
What muleman 1 suggested is somewhat accurate. I apply all over the west and most of the time is units I’ve never been on. But scouting obviously pays off big time. Are you a resident and how close do you live to the unit?

# 5. I may hunt there some day. I am a NR and doubtful I will be able to scout. And it will be a OIL hunt. I will be hiring an outfitter

so if you see a 180" deer while driving the unit during the hunt, do you just keep on truckin? Road hunting in some units can actually be pretty productive.

I am of the opinion that you shouldn't overlook any hunting method, and put them all to use to give you the best odds of killing a good buck. Of course road hunting is not always the most productive approach and is certainly not cool to the Cam Hanes humpers, but it is a viable approach, especially in some units in Utah (e.g. Vernon, Paunsaugunt, etc.).

The OP's boardname could actually be fairly productive in this unit.
 
Wish I could help you. But I have never hunted the unit.

Vernon seems to be close and hunted enough that many aren't willing to give info. Some of the harder to draw ones people are more ready to help, but those that know that unit seem to have family or friends that draw a tag every few years and keep info.

I am a local, originally from Fillmore but live in Delta now. I don’t really road hunt, just a username haha I’ve been out there, just never to hunt deer. Mainly hunt the Pahvant and oak creek when family or friends have a tag. I’ve been out scouting already as well just trying to learn the unit better

If you are from Utah I would head out and get familiar with the roads. Just about every canyon behind Vernon reservoir will hold deer. Now would be a go time before the hunts start. Good luck hope you find a big one!
 
I spent quite a bit of time out there last year. Here’s a few things I learned about the Vern:
-some of the best deer live on the bottom third of the mountain (flats and low hills). May seem backwards, I know.
-big deer enjoy private property. Especially next to wakeboard park subdivisions.
-if you kill a true 180”+ buck on the Vernon, pat yourself on the back and high five a cedar tree because you’ve truly done something.
-mornings are more productive than nights.
-keep an eye out for rattlesnakes.
-if you’re having a bad day go get a burger at the Silver Sage in Vernon. The bacon burger is 5 star cuisine after eating dust all day in a sXs.
-take spare tires.
-the Simpson’s isn’t just a show on tv and may have fewer deer but better quality.
-for a limited entry area, I was truly blown away how many people wouldn’t leave their vehicle on this hunt. I saw a guy shoot a 2x3 off the road when I knew for a fact there were 4, 4 points right over the hill. A little effort goes a long way on this hunt.

All in all, get out there as much as possible. I had as much fun scouting as I did hunting. It’s a cool area and there is no shortage of deer. Good luck!

Yeah I’ve already seen a few rattlesnakes and they make me want to become a road hunter haha I hate those things

It was a joke guys! ‘Cause of his name…. Just trying to lighten the mood.

But even you two are not advocating never leaving your vehicle until you see one you want to shoot, right? Sure it’s a part of scouting and hunting and who knows, you might get lucky. And no, I wouldn’t turn down a 180 just because it happened to run across the road in front of me.

It's Possible But When You Get That Close To Them It's Usually Not Gonna Happen!

I Un-Loaded My Gun & Let Him Live!

In Hopes He Might Live & Grow For A Couple More Years!

Hey sorry for the late reply. I did see a lot of really nice bucks. Tons of 150-170 type bucks. I think the biggest one I seen while scouting was maybe 180ish. There’s definitely bigger bucks than that out there, seen lots of pictures of some bucks other guys were able to harvest this year that were easily that big. I seen two giant 2 points while hunting haha they were 28 inches wide with good mass, big boxy suckers. They were tempting to kill.
