Elk Unit 16

My daughter drew the early tag 16-1. We hunted the unit back in 2011 and I know the Q has purchased more ranches in the area. Was wondering if anyone has some current info on the unit.
Thanks

I hunted 16 a while back. I wouldn't expect a whole lot to change other than as you mentioned in your post the Q has a little more land. My guess is that there still are a lot of cow tags issued...possibly even more than were issued when you last hunted there? I'm sure you are aware that the cow hunters will likely hit the public land roads pretty hard and the elk will likely be spooked onto the Q and other private land.

The GnF have upped the bull and cow tags since 2011. In my opinion it's become a zoo, and the GnF have once again screwed up another great elk area. Too many elk tags, a general deer season in October, and not a ton of public land for the amount of tags issued. With that said, I do have a late season cow tag in 16.

I live in Washington where the hunting has went in the toilet. But that said, there is one law in Washington that Wyoming should adopt. In all these elk areas they should start the dash one and dash two bull tag hunts a few days (2-5) before the antlerless dash 4, dash 6, and dash 7 hunts. Let the guys that finally draw the bull tags have a few days of quality hunting before the road hunting crazy cow crew hit the hills and everything goes into chaos mode. Just my opinion not that it’s worth much.

They will never do that because they think there are too many elk in many of these areas they would rather see dead cows then anyone have a quality bull hunt

Agree, it’s a negative that comes with a LQ elk tag in Wyoming however the pluses far outweigh it. It also depends on the unit, some units its a non issue.

Get her a bow and start practicing. The top of Shirley Mt. is always a bugle fest in September and the first few days of rifle season before they get pushed onto the Q Creek.

And during the rut some nice bulls cross over from the Q unto Shirley Mountain every day if you know where to look.
