I now have 32 Points

I am 67 and was hoping for a Unit 2 hunt, this year I bought a MuzzleLoader hoping to draw but a few other showd up with 31 points (this is what I have for draw) and 1 with 32 ponts. The rifle tag can be out a while also, so my question. Should I look at a different unit (40/61/other) and use my point or wait for Unit 2. In any of the zones I plan to hire an outfitter.

Nothing in CO compares to the NW corner. Personally, I'd stick it out, but it kind of depends on your health. You should draw in the next five years unless more people jump in above you.

I would apply for the early rifle Unit 2 tag next year. It was 4 of 6 with 32 NR points this year. The muzzleloader tag there are only 10 of and only 1 of those is going to an NR. The early rifle tag there are 32 of and 5 of those going to NRs.

I feel you! I applied for an archery elk tag in the NW corner also. With 30 points I expected to draw this year. Last year 2 people with 29 points drew. This year 2 of 5 drew with 30 points. The way I interpret the draw report there are 212 people with more points than I have (Pre draw) and another 163 with the same amount. You never know who or how many are going to jump in to your chosen choice of hunt. I’m only 63 so I’m going to stay the course and hope for the best.

So nobody in the 33-38pt range drew a tag? Thats weird.

A little advice from someone that’s 72. You need to go hunting as soon as you can. Health issues sneak up on you. One month you feel fine and the next month everything falls apart.

Outfitters in Unit 40 are booked two to three years out so you need to book now if that’s where you are going. Muzzleloader or first rifle.

Trophy Class Outfitters and Biggarstaff are two outfitters that have a lot of private land in that unit.

They kill an occasional 350 bull in Unit 40 but those are the exception. A 320 or 330 bull would be a reasonable expectation for muzzleloader or first rifle.

Some of the biggest bulls coming out of Colo are shot on large private ranches in Southern Colo that don't take near as many pts as 2, 10, or 201. You won't have to mess with hunting public land with other yahoo cow elk and other hunters on all exclusive private ranches. There are also a few private RFW ranches scattered across Colo that if you go guided can hunt elk with rifle in September during prime rut dates. There's nothing like hunting rutting bulls with a rifle! All it takes is big $!

I thought NR's can't hunt RFW? I'd get on a wait list for Unit 40 and keep putting in for Unit 2 for a few years. The wait in unit 40 Outfitted will probably be 3 years anyway. 40 has the same caliber bulls as 2 if you are on good private.

@mdndeer what cowhitey said above is your best course of action, imo. Get on the waitlist and keep applying for the hunt your hoping for. You need to hedge your bets!

Second that and excellent input, I’d find a sweet RFW unit and rock!

So correct ! I’m 77 now & nothing is getting better- if it don’t hurt, it don’t work anymore !
Get hunting NOW ASAP before something gets even worse. NOW is the time. Best of luck ! 😇

It depends on what your expectations are, for the hunt, and bull quality. 61 has alot of elk, and some nice bulls, again not the same quality as unit 2 or 201, but 300 to 310 is doable. the terrain is rougher than 2, but when I went with my friend it was a fun hunt and he didnt have the early tag, he had first rifle season.

I burned my 27 points this year and happy to be out of the game. I met Garth Carter many years back and hosted him for a CA turkey hunt. I subscribed to his very first newsletter when it was a few pages stapled together. He encouraged my group to start building points in many western states. He said the Ranching for Wildlife program in CO could be a possibility for us someday. We all know how that turned out for NR's. Anyway, all of us stuck with it. I remember going to the bank and getting two money orders...... one for deer and one for elk. The ladies at the bank would wish us luck. Then came the requirement of buying the small game license.... another revenue stream, wolf reintroduction and point creep. It was time to step off of the treadmill. FYI unit 40 muzzy elk outfitted.

I am a couple years behind you and trying to burn my points. Thought I would get 61 this year but did not draw. Hoping for next year now.

It’s pretty silly. When I got in the game 61 was 7-8 for res archery. 76 was probably 4-5 or five ish. And the nw corner was probably upper teens or so. Now 76 is atleast 9 for archery, and definitely not worth that! 61 is 17-18? I haven’t looked lately. And nw corner is mid 20s. Give it another ten years.

Can't say I'd be comfortable entrusting Colorado with a bunch of points the way they are managing things.

I’ve got 20 elk points but doubt I’ll ever get anywhere in that NW Hot Zone . About only one in my reach is 40- maybe 🤔, but takes lots of big $$$$ too. Just have to keep trying ! Ugh. I’m thinking 40 still better than 61- anyone agree on that ? I’ve never been in any of those units . Just dreaming. 🤔
