My First hunt of 2024 (cow elk)

Drew out for a new CWMU cow elk hunt this year, wasn't really expecting to draw but I was one of the two public hunters drawn.

Season started August 1st, I loaded the kids and their grandpa up and headed up the mountain last night. We found a giant herd but they was all on another property that we couldn't hunt, we watched them awhile hoping they would make a move to our side of the fence but they never did. We decided with the last bit of light we would drive around to another spot with a pond the elk like to go too.

Sure enough there was a small herd on the pond, I quickly got set up and was able to single out a cow at the back of the herd with no calf, and put her down (I really didn't want to shoot a mama).

I'm really grateful for this opportunity, my freezer has been on the empty side for a few months, will be nice to get some more elk meat stocked up. Was a late night of getting her taken care of but it will be worth it.

Here are a couple pictures.

Well!

I'm Not in To Killin Cows!

But I'll Bet If You Got Her Cooled Out In Good Time That's Gonna Be Some Good TASTY Meat!

I Do Believe If An Animal Is On The GAIN & Not Pushed Around For Several Months There's Gonna Be A Big Difference In The Meat Quality!

Wait Till Hossy See's This!

I'm Already On His Sshitt List & He's Claiming I'll Be Hunting For 3 Months!

But You Are In BIG Trouble!

You're On The 4 Month Sshitt List!:D

Was that a head shot that took out her bottom jaw? Always love some fresh elk in the freezer...

Congrats on your first of 2024, well maybe it's not your first of 2024...

Yeah, follow up head shot, no need to waste any meat after she was down.

Not sure what you are implying with the last part of your second sentence, but as the title says, this was my first hunt and kill of 2024.

I'm With Tikka!

Was That Shot With A MAGNUM Bow?:D
CWMU hunt is an any weapon hunt, I chose to use my 300 WSM.

That's cool you don't hunt cows, I enjoy eating them so no skin off my back. The elk herd on this unit isn't struggling in the least.

In fact we had some of her tonight, decided to attempt a rib roll, and carved out one side of her ribs before putting her in the meat cooler for processing, ended up just winging it and cooked them on the grill tonight.

Wife and kids all loved it. Next time might try it in the slow cooker.

Jake, I suppose I didn't read the post tittle well enough... I was just implying that you may have had a January cow tag or some other early 2024 tag...
Thats all...
How'd the ribs turn out, they look great...

Ha, no worries.

They was good, a bit chewy, but flavor was good. Definitely going to keep trying some different methods for cooking them. Looking online it looks like all day in the slow cooker is the best way to do it, but I didn't have the time right now to attempt that.

Well If She's Tough?

I Wanna Know How Far You Run Her?

I smoke for 2 hours, wrap in foil with some kind of liquid like BBQ sauce or whatever you want so they don’t dry out for 2-3 hours depending on meat mass and desired tenderness. I like them fall of the bone tender. So it’s not really the 3-2-1 method but the same concept.
