Getting some camping gear ready. I realize how good a decision it was to buy a pair of 2000 watt generators that weigh 50 lb each. The 100 lb 4k Champion I have is too heavy now . I've lost some strength. I could always lift it to the tailgate of my 97 F-250. There is no way I would try that now at 65 with the taller F-350 I have now. I would be disabled lol. But is a bummer. Maybe after some work in the gym buy I won't be trying.

It's not always fun getting old but it beats the alternative. The doctor said I'm in pretty good shape for the shape I'm in.
It sure does beat the alternative. I can always use the bigger generator for other things or when I have help to lift it. I've had back problems much of my life so I'm not looking to make it worse. Some days when it starts to act up I take 800 mg and I'm back in the game.
We press forward Eel ! I may have some good fish pictures to show next week.

Haha. Know how you feel and I am only 61. Been thinking about rigging up a boom setup on my equipment trailer to pick up and load heavy items. Have a plate compactor I use to pick up and put in back of truck. Now it’s a hassle just dragging it. And to make it worse I purchased a new truck. The tailgate is way higher than my ‘02 was. 🤣🤣

Yup, every day I worry about hurting my back. Worst this year was changing a flat on the 350 in the ditch on a dirt road. A Subaru was looking pretty damn good.

Then there were the 16 solar batteries at 115# each that I had to swap.

I’m afraid I’m going to have to make some uncomfortable lifestyle choices pretty quick.:( SS and medicare will soften the blow I guess? Jeezus……

That is literally a ton of batteries. I'm already making some choices. For now though my 350 has new tires and a complete maintenance on every little thing needed. Those bags of chicken feed need to be lighter. I'm glad I have an easy govt job. Just requires lots of training and being responsible for many systems bit it isn't physical. I had all those physical jobs when I was in my 20s and early 30s. That's when I messed up my back. With a Cervical RF Ablation C6 and C7 , and a nerve block on my ribs 2 weeks apart in August maybe I will be reminded to be careful.

So how much of a change has there been since you guys were 53?
I go to 53 in a month.
I'm in the same boat as you. I turned 53 back in February. I still feel pretty healthy and strong. I workout 4-5 days a week to try to stay ahead of the inevitable. Lol. I'd imagine there's a big change after 60....guess I didn't answer your question though. I'm not qualified to answer yet!🤣🤣

At 53 I tough or my mind told me I could still do everything I had been do and I did. At almost 64 my mind and body tells me over and over that I'm getting old and it is going to hurt!!! 😉

53 was 22 years ago so I can't remember. :)

If you remain healthy it's a very gradual change, almost imperceptible. If you're lucky enough to not have any physical break downs (knees, back. hips, etc.) like I was, you just face it as the occasion arises. The good news for me is that my mind ages at about the same rate as my body so I see things differently than when I was younger. Once in a while my mind writes checks that my body can't cash, but not too often. Pretty soon a lot of what you did back in the day become just pleasant memories. I guess it's called growing old gracefully.

One thing I've noticed the past few years is that my balance is not as good so be careful of that.

Part of the deal the way I look at it, I've worked physical jobs my whole career knee went to hell in my 40's, first hip when I hit 50, second hip 60 then prostate cancer at 64, and add a few other issues in between. The way I look at it no matter how good of shape you're in the age deal is going to get you and the check engine light is more likely to come on. Hell you got out to do a few simple projects and all of a sudden your bleeding like a gut shot buck and the next day you are one solid bruise

At 53-54, starting 4 months before hunting season, I was running 8 miles a day, 7 days a week and I would walk/hike 7 miles a day, 5 days a week. I would walk/hike at 5;30 in the morning before work, then run in the evening when I got home. I was able to do that for about 3 years. I then changed from running to biking 18 miles in the morning, then walk/hike in the afternoon. After my second back surgery at 59, I would only do walk/hikes. I would do 7 miles in the morning and 7 miles in the evening. That lasted up until I was about 63. Things really started to go downhill when my back was getting bad again. I had to have back surgery again last year which resulted in returning a Utah Early Rile Elk tag back in after 27 years of applying. Prior to my surgery, my legs had gotten so weak from nerve issues, thus surgery number 3. My legs were still to weak to do an Elk hunt. Prostate cancer at 65 created it's own issues while trying to exercise (Like not being able to control your pissing for at least 4-6 months). I have been in physical therapy to try and build up some leg strength and it seems to be working. At 68, it has been getting harder & harder. I will need back surgery #4 at the end of the year, which will hopefully address a chronic issue in my right leg. One of my problems over the years is having been in the construction industry since I was 27 years old. I always enjoyed doing the physical work, but it has taken it's toll on me. Only thing to do is keep on truck'n!....and hunting!!!!

Founder, for me it seemed like between 60 and 62 I really felt my body begin showing my age. I can still do most of what I used to but I am slower and don't recover near as quick. Muscle loss and joint problems are the biggest thing. I never was much on hiking steep terrain carrying a heavy pack. I always let my horses do that. Now I have to accept that some hunts are just not feasible for someone 65 years old living in flat land and having bum ankle and knee. I can still fish for hours on end though!!!

I just hit 54 and I’ve really noticed the past year or two that I’m just no longer as strong or as agile. Thing is, my whole life I’ve always been “the little engine that could” and I think it’s finally catching up to me.

I hear ya on that. Spent 30+ years playing human forklift. Now, at 53, I'm a little wiser when I need to lift stuff. About the only real issue I have is occasional knee or shoulder pain. I think the key is to stay active and know your limitations. Getting old and weaker is inevitable to us all....this kind of made me think of one of my hunting buddies. He always says, "I used to not back down from a fight. Now I'm too old. I'll just shoot ya!"🤣🤣

May I remind you……. Repeat these lyrics every morning and before you go to sleep at night. If you do, “it’s all right”, “we’re going to the end of the line”.

End of the Line
Well it`s alright, ridin` around in the breeze
Well it`s alright, if you live the life that you please
Well it`s alright, doin` the best you can
Well it`s alright, as long as you lend a hand

You can sit around and wait for the phone to ring
Waiting for someone to tell you everything
Sit around and wonder what tomorrow will bring
Maybe a diamond ring

Well it`s alright, even if they say you`re wrong
Well it`s alright, sometimes ya gotta be strong
Well it`s alright, as long as you got someone to lay
Well it`s alright, every day is just one day

Maybe somewhere down the road a ways
You`ll think of me and wonder where I am these days
Maybe somewhere down the road when somebody plays
Purple Haze

Well it`s alright, even when push comes to shove
Well it`s alright, if you got someone to love
Well it`s alright, everything will work out fine
Well it`s alright, we`re going to the end of the line

Don`t have to be ashamed of the car I drive
I`m just glad to be here happy to be alive
And it don`t matter if you`re by my side
I`m satisfied

Well it`s alright, even if you`re old and gray
Well it`s alright, ya still got somethin` to say
Well it`s alright, remember to live and let live
Well it`s alright, best you can do is forgive

Well it`s alright, ridin` around on the breeze
Well it`s alright, if you live the life you please
Well it`s alright, even if the sun don`t shine
Well it`s alright, we`re going to the end of the line

Retired at 65, for the first 7 years, I could still crawl under my vehicles, see the front sight, the back sight and the target, all at the same time. I could walk up hill and down. Rotate my hips into a fairway swing, haul logs, go into the basement…….. and get out. I could drive 12/13 hours a day, shoot a rifle somewhat accurately, off hand. Set up and take down camp unassisted. I could go on.

For the last 5 years, I can’t, nor do I want to …… it hurts and I’m not a great fan of pain.

If you’re wanting to play in the woods, fishing in fast water, hunt mule deer like Founder in Wyoming…….. don’t put off retirement one day longer than you have to. The longer you wait….. the fewer good days you’re going to have, before you can’t and won’t care.

Just saying……you ain’t gonna be ten feet tall and bullet proof forever.

Just turned 71 back in June , really didn’t feel anything till I hit 68 ! I still keep pretty busy but just take it slower and more careful of what I do like not jumping off a flatbed truck onto the ground 🤣

I'm almost 71. The loss of muscle coupled with arthritis slows you down. Retired from concrete and that didn't help. But I still fool myself at times. Monday and Tuesday fighting fire I made 3 trips packing 3 gallons of water in a backpack sprayer up a 45 deg slope a 1/2 mile. After Tuesday I was pretty stoved up. Could never have done it without trekking poles. You have to adapt to the changes, you can't beat them.

Why do they keep making the truck beds so high ? I have to step on the tire to look into the bed now .

First stock truck I have had to carry a small step ladder to get into my tool box, also use it to get in and out of the bed with tailgate down.
Another problem is I thinking if lifting it so I can run cleated chains on all 4 when needed. For as tall as they are there is not much tire to fender clearance.

Looks like we are the same age Brian.
This past year or so, I do not have near the energy I once had. It used to be that when I was done with work, I was working a different job, going to the hills, or fishing. I do not do that as often a feel tired!

I need to get in better shape I guess! I still feel well overall but do not want to take anything for granted.

I’ve been moving this week and find myself telling my two sons to lift the heavy stuff 😀

Well, I’m with you guys at 64, knees not great, broken back a few yrs ago , etc

I’ve shot tons of deer here back east well over 400 maybe 5. One thing I found out is it gets harder every year to lift em in the truck, i have a small truck for that reason. If I had a full size, full height truck I’m not sure I could do it. As of now I can get the dead sled to just hang onto the tailgate for me to lift the one end of the sled into the bed of the truck. You guy , like I will continue to do this stuff till we’re dead. Lol!

But Damn Lumpy!

When People Seen You Doing That They'd Never Screw With You!

I’m too dumb to invest in these kind of tools, I’ve just “figured out” stupid ways to put things where I needed them.

In my 30’s I’d load, by hand, 6, 55 gallon barrels of lubricants, off the ground, into my 4x4 pick up every day, to deliver to oil rigs. Totally stupid!!!

I'm just about 20 years older than you. I feel pretty good overall. However, my strength and stamina have gone downhill gradually over the past 20 years. Stay within your known boundaries. You'll figure those out as you age, like the rest of us old farts have. Stay active and pray for good health. Cancer strikes when you least expect it...but, expect it.

I road hunt a lot more than I ever did, lol. Glass, glass, and glass. Only kill stuff I can get the truck to; especially elk!!

Enjoy life to the fullest! That's the best advice I can give anyone!

I cringe at the thought of lifting those barrels
The stuff hernias are made from.

Tip the top over against the tailgate. Squat down, put your hands under the bottom of the barrel, lift with your legs….. as the barrel starts to tip into the bed, lean into the bottom and push with your chest, until the barrel slides half way onto the tail gate. Turn it side ways and roll it into the bed. Hop in, stand the barrel up and move it in place.

Repeat 5 more times……. Watching someone do it before you try it, makes a big difference.

At 77 I can barely crawl in the cab, let alone do any good.

PS: Don’t try this method with a barrel of antifreeze…….. it will strain your milk, for sure.

With all the big buck photos you share on here I'm pretty sure your heart rate stays elevated and is in good shape. :)

When I was 26 I lost my left hand.
I adapted to it fairly quickly and made out okay.
Hit 50 almost six years ago and still felt young.
Hit 53 almost three years ago and it really started adding up with extra strains and stuff.
Lifting and moving yard-work tools/ materials, chainsaw/wood, decoys, hauling out dead animals, etc all on right side makes my back sore each morning, takes about ten minutes every morning to get loosened up.
A passion of mine is hunting late season Geese and landing them in decoys, I need Ibuprophen after almost every session of laying on ice/snow to make that happen.
Gonna try really hard to kill at least a raghorn with my bow this year then sadly probably will hang up Elk hunting. Just too hard to get an animal out anymore.
Ten years too early…..sucks.
Like they say, ‘being young is wasted on the youth’, or something like that.

Probably not telling you anything you don’t know MrShane.

I was moving a fair amount of heavy equipment up and down stairs and such, in my 50’s, I took one ibuprofen every morning and another ever night. It made a huge difference in my pain levels but I ended up permanently loosing kidney function by taking it so often. I immediately, totally, stopped taking it, and my kidneys immediately stopped getting any worse. That was 16 years ago. I can live with soreness, I can’t live without kidneys………

Just saying…… you may want to keep an eye on your kidney function as you go forward.

All the best, you’re an inspiration to the rest of us.

You are too kind Lumpy, I am just a normal guy trying to have fun like you and the rest of MM’s.
I do go very careful on the pills and only take them on very rough days.
In fact, just had blood work done about a month ago and everything except my weight looks good health wise.
Unfortunately I gain weight if I even think about a piece of lettuce. Haha

Oh ya, the issues with weigh have a firm grip on me too. 2lumpy is not an alter ego, I can assure you of that.
