RRS lightweight conversion.

For those of you that have a RRS tripod.....I want the stability from my RRS 34 to shoot from but don't want the weight, so I removed the lower two leg sections and I'm having my friend make me some aluminum thread protectors with a screw hole to screw the RRS feet into. This will cut my weight down to just 2 oz heavier than the new TFCX and has way more stability to it. The TFCX sounds great but if the stability is like the other 1 series tripods, I'd much prefer the extra 2 ounces from my 3 series.

Here's my conversion weights: With the two bottom extensions removed plus the anvil 30 and the PT scout it weighs in at 3.7 lbs. With the two bottom legs removed plus the anvil 30 only it comes in at 3.2 lbs. If you remove the Anvil 30 and replace it with the PT scout, it weighs in at 2.76 lbs. The PT scout is amazing for glassing but still works great for locking in a rifle. Especially a hunting weight rifle in the 8-9 pound range. The 2.76 pounds is even lighter than my compact Outdoorsmans and outdoorsmans head and 10x more stable.

How come RRS doesn’t put center columns in their tripods? Seems like all of them they offer are fixed at the top.

The ascend has a center column. The new TFCX has a small center column. I've always been a fan of a center column to switch from binos to my BTX level quickly but you do give up a lot of stability with a center column. My new RRS tripod does not have the center column and it's taking some getting used to but honestly the legs adjust so easily that I don't think I'll miss the center column.
