I now have 32 Points

I am 67 and was hoping for a Unit 2 hunt, this year I bought a MuzzleLoader hoping to draw but a few other showd up with 31 points (this is what I have for draw) and 1 with 32 ponts. The rifle tag can be out a while also, so my question. Should I look at a different unit (40/61/other) and use my point or wait for Unit 2. In any of the zones I plan to hire an outfitter.

Nothing in CO compares to the NW corner. Personally, I'd stick it out, but it kind of depends on your health. You should draw in the next five years unless more people jump in above you.

I would apply for the early rifle Unit 2 tag next year. It was 4 of 6 with 32 NR points this year. The muzzleloader tag there are only 10 of and only 1 of those is going to an NR. The early rifle tag there are 32 of and 5 of those going to NRs.

I feel you! I applied for an archery elk tag in the NW corner also. With 30 points I expected to draw this year. Last year 2 people with 29 points drew. This year 2 of 5 drew with 30 points. The way I interpret the draw report there are 212 people with more points than I have (Pre draw) and another 163 with the same amount. You never know who or how many are going to jump in to your chosen choice of hunt. I’m only 63 so I’m going to stay the course and hope for the best.

So nobody in the 33-38pt range drew a tag? Thats weird.

A little advice from someone that’s 72. You need to go hunting as soon as you can. Health issues sneak up on you. One month you feel fine and the next month everything falls apart.

Outfitters in Unit 40 are booked two to three years out so you need to book now if that’s where you are going. Muzzleloader or first rifle.

Trophy Class Outfitters and Biggarstaff are two outfitters that have a lot of private land in that unit.

They kill an occasional 350 bull in Unit 40 but those are the exception. A 320 or 330 bull would be a reasonable expectation for muzzleloader or first rifle.

Some of the biggest bulls coming out of Colo are shot on large private ranches in Southern Colo that don't take near as many pts as 2, 10, or 201. You won't have to mess with hunting public land with other yahoo cow elk and other hunters on all exclusive private ranches. There are also a few private RFW ranches scattered across Colo that if you go guided can hunt elk with rifle in September during prime rut dates. There's nothing like hunting rutting bulls with a rifle! All it takes is big $!
