Havalon customer service is the worst I have ever seen!! I have used there knives for almost 15 years and will not buy one more! You can not get ahold of anyone but a call center and took over a week to get a warranty claim email returned.

Maybe you should think about buying this. I try to give very good customer service along with a great product.:p

Havalon blades are way too small!
I love outdoor edge knives for that kind of knife!

I agree with RELH though.
I will be buying one from him when a handle really trips my trigger!
I’ve missed a few from him because I was too late.
I’m that person that wants something way different or even odd.
All of his knives are awesome.
Jus looking for the one.

I love and hate the Havalon knives. They're scary sharp and a single distraction could mean a life-flight off the mountain. When I have to change a blade, I put the old blade it back into the foil pouch the new blade came from and then bring it home with me. They're pretty high quality stainless steel and would last a long time out there.

Ill be honest.... how do you warranty claim a $40 knife. I absolutely love there knifes! I've left more of them on the mtn then I care to admit!
Here is a link that you might find beneficial:

Ive bough six of them, now if I loose one.... I got extras LOL!
(also you need a small file to file off a little knob on the knife and then the havlon blades fit perfect)

Gentlemen, since I am a knife maker, you can take this opinion with a grain of salt. The above Allen Co. replaceable blade knife is 15 dollars with 4 replacement blades. At that price those blades are cheap Chinese steel that is about 54- 55RC in hardness. I doubt you will be able to field dress and skin out one game animal without changing blades due to a dull blade.
Like Tog, I will remain old school and invest in a knife that you take into the game field and use it on several animals and worry about touching it up after you get home from your hunting trip.
RELH

Maybe I'm old school, but a hunter needs a fixed blade knife. or at least a quality folder. disposable razors don't get it.
it's a scalpel, literally. doesn't get sharper than that and you can have 20 replacements in your pack if you want that basically take up the same room as a credit card. take apart an entire elk with your little 2" blade

that being said i also carry my grandfather's knife on every hunt. it makes a cut on every animal i take. usually what cuts the heart out. a guy should have a fixed blade knife and know how to sharpen it but you still can't beat a surgical edge on brand new scalpel blade. for some things (skinning for taxidermy) in the field they can actually be too sharp

How Many Blades Have you TRASHED The Mountain With?
this is the worst part. it actually really pisses me off when i see it, usually accompanied by a pair of blue gloves pigs leave on the mountain. i have a little plastic drill bit case i keep in my pack for the replacement blades. all the old ones go in there and come off the mountain with me.

pick up your trash people. stop being an azzhole

Not that hard to slide the used blade back into the foil pack the new one came out of and put into case or what ever one had the new blades in. As for gloves, turn them inside out and stuff in pack. I carry my game bags in gallon ziplocks or vacuum sealed bags. They make great trash bags.

LIK2HNT, I am still laughing over your reply to Bess on the gut hook. He will never give up on getting a gut hook knife.

Still need to plan a trip to come by and drop off the scales I have. Been a little over a year since I retired and I just can’t seem to catch up. Alway short on time, but on my own time schedule 😎😎😎

A nicely made custom fixed blade is an heirloom piece that could last for generations. not only is the quality superior but every time you pick it up or see it you're reminded of all the times you used it and the miles you carried it. my knives mean as much to me as my guns.

I'd never give that up for a throw away POS.

Well said.

RELH- do you have a website? I am looking for a knife and was looking at Montana's. I'd much rather support a guy here than a guy I don't know.

My Dad and I have been using Gerber Gators for years and years. They are cheap, perfect size and they hold an edge ok. Now that I have more money, I can afford to spend a bit more and splurge. LOL

You hear how the rich get richer, BESS? Wearing shoes from Costco and washing plastic utensils to use again.

I will....I'll google Hatfield knives now and see what comes up.

Can't take it with you, but need it to last til I'm 104!

I'm happy with my Havalon, it's true that sometimes I need a second blade on an elk. No trash left in the feild ever !!! You guys got me thinking about the need to get one quality knife from RELH to pass on to my son.

Yeah it’d be near impossible to have both in your pack. Those scalpel blades will really weigh you down.

I wonder if the first guy to see a Phillips head screw driver was all “ this disrespects my ancestors!!! Flat head screws only!!!”

I’ve used a Havalon on probably 150-200 animals since I’ve started using them years ago. Learn to cut joints where your not hitting bone a bunch with the blade, always cut the hide from the inside out, and you should be able to do a whole animal with one blade. If not, blades are cheap anyways.

You won't be disappointed.

Wiszard go to Facebook and search Hatfield knives. You will see a few that I have sold in the past. If I post a knife for sale on my Facebook page, I also post it on MM for the members to see.
Lik2hunt has purchased the most knives from me as a member of this forum, but I have a knife collector in Gainsville, GA. that has purchased 10 of my knives to add to his 350 knives in his collection. That collector told me that my knives are the sharpest in his entire collection and I sell them too cheap. He waited until after he bought the last 4 knives from me to tell me that I sell them too cheap. :ROFLMAO:

I always assumed Havalons were disposable. Even with a fancy handle they wouldn’t be an heirloom.

Except mine, which is the special Jim Shockey Hero Edition. It came with an action figure. I would buy a Hatfield in a second if it came with an RELH action figure. :)

As some have stated they are not a family heirloom knife, but when a company sells a product with a guarantee they should act in do time to honor it. After phoning them and being informed how to go about the warrantee process. I fill it out including photos of the knife. I don't receive email conformation back that it was received. I then call 10 days later to have them not answer and have to wait for a call back, kinda hard when working. Play phone tag for four times!! Then when I get ahold of a person that knows what is going on tell me I have not sent in the form. So I hang up and do it again and call back and wait for a call back from them! They then as I'm talking say they received my original claim and to send the knife in. I'm head to AK for a fishing trip and would love to have my filet knife with me, I highly doubt it will be!

I have a pair of underwear I feel the same way about.

Here's my Hatfield collection. I've bought over 20 knives from Bob in the past 10 years. I've gifted most of them but I still have several in my stable. I had him make the blue and multi colored handle knives for my two young children who are still several years away from being able to hunt. They're gonna start out with a quality fixed blade.

Same here. I've rarely used a second blade on most animals, including moose and bison.

I still use the buck knife my dad gave me. will last for my lifetime.

I understand the replaceable blade. Dont have to sharpen. low profile. but when you have to replace a blade in a winter storm. blade is frozen in and using a leatherman is the best way to put the blade in so you dont cut yourself. but then the push button doesnt work cause meat is jammed in.

I guess that happens with old age, short time memory. It appears that PCPython is the #1 MM-member on buying my knives. Some of those knives in the 2nd. photo go back a few years.
PC stay away from Bess, he might try to tune up your hunting vehicle to get even with you.

I like knifes.

My favorites are:
Buster Warenski friend local artistdeceased
Jim Ence local artist deceased
Jeff Nelsen friend local artist
Cris Peterson friend local artist
Robert Hatfield a ole time MM member
Remington Bullet folders
Case Pocket Knives
Havalon original
Schrade Pocket Knives
Buck Sheath and Folders
A few gifted from special friends that mean a great deal to me.

My most favorite is a Sheffield sheath knife my father bought me for my 14th birth day that was my only hunting knife for the first 25 years.

I value most… knifes from people l have some kind of friendship with along with their utility . I appreciate their art and their quality and their friendship. My other knives are utility only and each has a little different purpose but I use them all on certain occasions.

Here is my buck knife I got when I was 12. Been through a lot of big game with it

Then next is one I never used. A buck knife signed by the buck brothers. It's 31 of 50. Doesn't do a whole of good sitting on the shelf

Buck is an American company, and originally made all it's knives in the USA. At some point, competition from cheap overseas labor (mostly China), and high cost of doing business in San Diego California, caused them to relocate to Idaho. To compete on price, they started getting many knives made in China

Where are Buck Knives made?

Many Buck Knives are made in their Idaho plant, and some Buck Knives are made overseas – so the answer depends on which knife. Here’s a list of where each knife is made.
How do you tell which Buck knives are made in the USA, which ones are made in China? If you already own a Buck Knife, there is a small “usa” or “china” stamped on the blade near the handle.

When BUCK Pulled This BS I Have Never Bought Another BUCK Knife!

Several Years Ago I Bought A USA GERBER Folding Pocket Knife!

I Liked It Because It Was A Lock-Blade & Flat!

I Lost It & Decided To Get Me Another One!

Got It & That SOB Was Made In China!

Was Sharp When I Got It But After It Dulled You Couldn't Sharpen It!

Even Had A Professional Knife Sharpener Try & Sharpen It & He Said He'd Never Seen Anything Like It & He Was PISSED!

Relates Back To CHINA BUILT F'N TRASH!

Bess, if the steel was "soft" it will be nearly impossible to sharpen it. They either used a inferior steel or it had a very poor heat treating process, or a combination of both.
RELH

I Can Guarantee you it Wasn't Soft!

Ground Up JUNK Metal!

Cast Iron Maybe?

This is completely Wiszard’s fault… 😂
Well… that & a complete lack of self control.
Good ol’ EBay.

I haven’t had the occasion to put this to the test on an animal yet, but I look forward to having that OPPORTUNITY!

I’ve used a variety of knives over the years, including Havalon, Outdoor Edge, and Wyoming knives. The disposable surgical blade has a place. I’ll still carry them and use them. But the quality fixed blade is something I wanted for a long time and RELH met that need. It’s an awesome knife.

That is a good looking knife. I would like one like that, RELH. Keep me in mind please.

Glad you came clean Jorma! The question is....does the wife know what you spent on that knife? :)

Since some are talking about older Buck knives. Here is one of mine I bought as a kid in the early 70’s. I liked the look of a Bowie knife, but felt they were too big for hunting. So I saved up and bought a Buck 124. Wore it a few years, but felt it was to big also. Still have it, but just not used for hunting anymore.
