This is why some units are seeing tag cuts. Other units are increasing in numbers, so tag numbers are being increased.

The board won't approve the numbers until their meeting in May.

That said the LE tag numbers are probably not going to change significantly.

If there are changes made I would say they may adjust the general season deer tag numbers a bit. But that's just my opinion.

Some units like the Beaver are in terrible shape in deer numbers. Why increase Buck tags by + 600 when you have no deer to begin with. Just like Bucks do not grow the deer herd neither does one year of great winter conditions grow bucks if you have no deer to begin with.

Probably because when they did their postseason surveys in the fields, there was one buck over there target buck/doe ratio. They figured they needed to increase tags to bring that ratio down a little.

These threads are my absolute favorite!

Sorry I'm late to the party and unfortunately or fortunately (not sure what one yet) I haven't read through every post yet.

I live in the center of what most would consider the worst deer units in the state. I know visual observation and visual evidence doesn't count for much on these threads, but I have been out looking around the winter range and the deer seem to have faired pretty well this winter.

They look to be in overall good condition and fawn survival is looking good so far. One thing I find interesting is how drastic the winter kill can vary across one unit. Last year, I was shocked how much survival rates can change in just a few miles in the same unit. I don't believe the deer did "well" in any of our northern units, but there were a few sub sections where the survival rate seemed decent considering the conditions. Then literally 5 miles away, they were almost nonexistent. I'm referring to the units I observed, cache, rich, Morgan, East canyon and Ogden. Fawn survival was pretty much nonexistent in some sections of these units.

I'm not sure where all the numbers listed above came from, but to answer elkassassins question, I do believe the herd grew by 33% in one season. And to Vanillas proof request he's waiting on regarding the 70% loss in some units.... my deer calculator 2000 could verify elkassassin is correct once again for the northern most units. You see folks here is how it works, you want a certain answer to support your views, so you just twist statistics/facts and rework the math until the old deer calculator 2000 makes the numbers add up to whatever you want them to be. It's literally worked this way for decades. The newest "deer calculator 2000 gen2" now includes a automatic deer scorer thingy as well.

For example you can get the 70% loss in the northern units of utah by filtering the data to exclude everything but fawn mortality and Walla, you got your 70 +percent right there so elkassassin is correct I believe. Some areas lost nearly 100percent of their fawns in 2022/2023 winter. We all know fawns and mature bucks are most susceptible to winter kill, so you just factor those values in and you could easily hit the 70% Goal.

And I'm pretty sure, elkassasisn is correct on the buck numbers up north as well. There aren't any left! I've been out looking at turkeys a lot this month. In over 2 weeks, I haven't seen one deer with horns! That's right folks not one buck survived this winter per my observations. PRETTY DAM PATHETIC! I CAPITOLIZED THIS TO MAKE MY POINT MORE VALID!

Slightly off topic but can anyone explain to me why the heck all the turkeys, despite having access to thousands of acres of public land to roam, always seem to prefer to live on private property? They seem to have absolutely no respect for the clearly posted land they are trespassing on!
 
I have been all about tag cuts for years. I started doing more research and doing a little more listening. I actually don't mind the increases. More people can hunt and I actually think it can be good for the deer herd. Yes there won't be quite as many big bucks. However, I'm still confident I can have a good hunt. The buck to doe objective in my unit is 18 to 20. If increasing tags can still allow the ratio to be in that area then let's do it. I know Bess, buck to doe ratio is a poor indicator of herd health, but I'm just talking about buck quality.

Wait a minute...... were we supposed to actually read the information on tag numbers BEFORE we posted about it on this thread? Did you guys change the rules on me while I was out? I thought you just had to make a post to piss and moan because KSL said the DWR had proposed tag increases.

What next, are we going to have to watch the videos Jake H posted explaining the logic behind how they made these recommendations? Can't we just go back to making statements then ask others to provide us the information proving us wrong? I'll tell you what, if you all start telling me to show up to the RAC meetings or submit my feedback to the DWR I'm done. That's way too much work.


After further review (AKA reading the recommendations on tag numbers) I'm definitely not seeing where they increased tags on any of the units that lost 70% of their deer herd. Maybe the Vernal/Bonanza unit? I drove through that unit last fall and I saw like 10 deer from my truck so I'm sure they are fine.

Honestly, I only clicked on this thread because it said "Hows that Niller my boy" in the title. Figured it would be a good read. I didn't have anything constructive to say.

Down 100k deer but must be up in bucks. That seems a little weird. The buck fawns survive and the lady fawns must be the ones dying off. Too many bucks and not enough for. This go kill the bucks so that ratio matches up better.

I’ll take that bet, but this is the real world. In the real world when you make an assertion, it’s up to you to prove it. You have said a trillion times (at least) on this forum that the DWR numbers are wrong. So you can t use those.

For the record, I’m not questioning how many deer were lost. I’ll accept the units you claim had them. However, none of those hardest hit units are proposed to get tag increase this year. If you’d take three seconds to actually engage your brain for once before posting you might have noticed that. I doubt it, but maybe.

Yes, we had units that were hit really hard last year. They had tag decreases last year and none are proposed to have any increases this year. All of this was in direct reply to a claim you made above, which I quoted more than once, and was factually wrong.
