Side by side question for those of you with some experience. Looking at buying a used rzr. Really like the 2016-2017 year 4 seat model.

Question is what’s “high miles” on these things? I know it’s subjective to how they have been used and maintained. seeing some decent ones with 5k on them. Seems like above and below that appears to be the point of price difference. I just don’t know if 5000 miles in 6 years is a bunch or not

Make Sure & Get One That's Already Piped & 12K Worth Of Other Accessories!

Then You Won't Have To Do It Yourself!

You Not Wanting To Scratch Your 90K Pick-Up Or What?

Last year-ish we decided to get a sxs. My goal was 1500 miles or less. We were going to be patient. 3 days later found a 2020 can-am 800r with only 900 miles. Paid less than what it was worth plus got a brand new trailer with it. All gonna depend how the previous owner took care of it.

When we were looking anything with extra mods or muddy pics we didn't even look at. Also started with a basic package to see what we need to add or look for in our next machine.

We put 400 miles on it one year. Does everything we want it to do.First thing I did was oil change and learn to change the belt. I don't want a belt to break and be cussing a storm. I learned packing a few tools and tricks to do the job quick. Can-am has horrible engineering for easy access. That's my only complaint.

We don't need a big hopped up sxs. All the trails we took we run 20 mph or less. I told myself I would never own one or use to hunt. Well this last year instead of beating up the truck to get to one of my spots we used the sxs to access the trail we can then hike into.

Here it is. After getting my dads deer a few miles in on foot used the sxs to drive out the 20 miles instead of the rough ride in the truck

I sold my 2014 RZR 800 last May for 7k
It had 7500 miles on it and ran like a champ.
Well maintained and I’ve seen them go over 15k miles.
I bought a new RZR 900 ultimate and put a heater in it

Took my time and found a 2012 Can am commander with 600 miles. Bought it on September 15th 2016 just before the hunts. Paid $10,500. Worth every penny and paid for it's self now. Used it for 8 years of hunts now and just hit 3000 miles. Service regularly. Only use it for hunting and generally drive it between 7 and 12 miles an hour from camp to drop off points. Still runs like a top.

I don’t remember whining about sxs but maybe I did. I post a lot.

Looking for the same reason a lot of guys do. So much better getting around over getting the hell beat out of you in the truck going 10mph. Honestly 90% of what I want it for is coyote hunting. Desert roads are the worst.

I’ll do similar to you @nfh , ride it to the trail head as most of my big game hunting is up non motorized trails. But also my grandkids will be getting to the age here where riding around in it’s self will be fun for them

Going to try and find one about 2k on mileage if I can , in those years of 16-17 that’s about the lowest mileage I’m seeing. Good advice in staying away from the “tuned” ones

Finding a bunch on ksl so looks like it will be a toad trip to tardville this spring. Let me know if any of you guys want me to swing by so you can punch me in the face

A Toad Trip!:D

Looking for a 4 seater, I’ll do the cab and heated thing as well as bench seats

I would go with a Honda pioneer. I really like mine and I don’t have to deal with drive belts. 4000 miles on mine and it’s a 2015. It’s just a 500 and it’s plenty for me and the wife.

I got a new ranger last May, It is just about to turn 7000 miles. I would expect to get 20.000 miles, but it will take some repairs. Honda is better. but you will pay more up fount and when I got the Ranger you could not find a Honda to buy.

I love my Honda Pioneer 1000, but, my only complaint is the seat gets real warm from the engine. On cold days it’s great, on hot days it is too much if you are riding more than 20 minutes... Even with aftermarket heat shield it’s just a lot of heat…

If you're looking for bench seats the Razr and General should be off the list. They are 4 seaters with buckets. Ranger, Defender, Pioneer, Teryx etc all have bench seats...

you can put bench seats both front and back on a 4 seat razor.

I Stopped At Our Local Polaris Shop A Few Months Back!

They Had Full Size Side X Sides From About 27K On Up To 50K!

How Much Is That PISSCUTTER Worth?

Oh I Forgot!

People Don't Wanna Use Their 120K Trucks In Fear They Might Scratch Them!

Not a Rzr but you can get a new machine in that price range

In that price range, I’d definitely look at new instead of used.
I’m seeing a lot new of Kawasaki teryx 4 listed and it’s one I’d definitely look at. They have bucket seats but you won’t regret skipping the bench seat. They’re a well built machine and the only brand on the market offering a 3 year warranty.

I bought one a few years back and thought it would help me get back into those hidden places and my family would like it. I drew a desert sheep hunt and took it, after a couple of days driving it around I took it home and brought my Tahoe back . I can’t stand the dirt and dust on everything I own . I also found myself road hunting out of it , like everyone else. My family would rather hike, they really didn’t care for it. I will tell you one more thing a lot of guys won’t like, I have never seen a more destructive machine to the environment than these, they are destroying the deserts. You should come on over to Hailey Idaho for your new toy, Carl Malone has the newest and hottest machines fully loaded for 50,000.00. I hope you like it more than I did,

I'm With hawk!

And I'm Sure Different Models Create Different Levels Of Dust!

I Don't Own One But The Few I've Road In Between The Noise & Dust I'll Stick To My Wheelers & Freeze My Ass Off!:D

BIGJOHN Might Take Me For A Ride In His New SXS!:D

It's Probably Got Heat & Air!:D

Couple things to think about with them. I personally feel hours and maintenance are more important than miles. Gives you a feel for how they were used. I sold my 2016 Teryx with 250 hours and 4500 miles. We drove it on gravel roads a lot, but not much off road.

In places like Moab and Az where they are legal on highways, they get a lot of high speed miles, and also rough use. Beware of rentals that shops are dumping too, as some have marginal maintenance performed. I would ask for a shop inspection before buying another. Be suspect if the just put a new belt on it, or power washed everything and repainted.

Try to buy smart, and not just cheap

Free advice is worth what you pay but I would never buy a used SxS from someone I didn’t know, or already know the machine.
Not many guys maintain them like they should and they get ridden HARD.
Between family and friends, we own about every brand and style, except CanAm, and every one of those machines have their quirks and weak spots and there are slot of things on them that just aren’t that durable, considering the type of abuse they’re put through.
Buy new, in the end you won’t regret it.

we had polaris sxs's where i worked. they got used pretty hard. i personally wouldn't buy one. they are all pretty cheaply made. they were always being worked on. 5000 miles is a lot for a sxs. for the price, i'd buy a jeep or small 4x4 truck.

sold the jeep. i'm a firm believer in a atv/utv being way nicer to bump around on back roads with. i have my quad (canam) and its great, but cant take anyone with me. my kids are grown and the wife is starting to want to do more of the recreational type sightseeing (fair weather stuff) so the sxs scene is the direction were going to go.

some really good comments on things to look out for here guys, i appreciate it. i could go drop big coin on the brand new bells and whistles but i'm a pretty handy mechanic as well so i feel like if i can find the machine that some family just kinda bounced around in the summer camping trips with i can take it from there. seen a few down in utah that look like they really have seen zero abuse. i'll be patient when shopping till i find the right one. need to find some old guy like @2lumpy who just used it to check his mail

I know it's off subject, but this old machine has been absolutely amazing for me over the years. In 2008 I bought a Rhino 700 brand new. It now has 14,250 miles on it. Only things I had to fix are a few wheel bearings, a stator, brake pads, 1 belt, and a few CV boots. I laugh at how people are like "Why are you still using that slow old machine?" All while they drive their 1000 turbos all of 15 mph on a mountain road. I can't justify getting rid of it for something newer, because it will never die.

Not that it matters as mine is a 2 seater, but I had to look. a bit over 500 miles, 2015 RZR 900. I use it mostly for taking the dogs on runs to get exercise.

I have been hunting out of a Honda talon for a few years now. I could buy a bench seat for the back seat but I like the way it is now with buckets. 32” tires give me incredible clearance. The bed isn’t as big as the utility type SxS’s but is plenty big enough for me. I usually hunt with myself plus one so the back seats hold our gear. I went on an elk hunt with four of us and we went where most trucks couldn’t due to the heavy snow. I also have a rigid seat protector for the rear when I take my dog chukar hunting and I can comfortably with two friends with the dog in there. So far has been perfect for me. Also no belts to break.

I picked up a new Honda Pioneer 1000-5 last summer for a couple hunts in UT and WY. Added a windshield and a mid panel to keep the wind and dust down. We used it on our WY 128-1 tags last year and even with the half doors we did fine. So far I really like it and starting to consider selling my 2012 Honda Foreman quad. The Pioneer dwarves our 1966 912!

If I was rich like Bess, I would get a honda.

I am on my second Kawaskai Teryx. My son rolled my first one and the insurance company totaled it. My friend called them and offered to buy it. He ended up fixing the frame and is still driving it. I know a year or two back, it had over 10,000 miles. It has had zero problems.

I bought another teryx a few years to replace the old one. It is a four-seater. It has been a great machine. I have put more miles on it pushing show in the past few years than I have hunting with it! I am very happy with it and the cost was much less than other models.

I am going to put a heater in it and an enclosed cab this summer...

I have owned a jeep and there is no comparison, for running around in the hills. I spent last spring hunting bear and it was great to be able to run around the roads and check bait sites, without beating my truck up.

this is exactly the type machine im looking for. the 32" tires are a must in my opinion

7,000 miles in 10 months is crazy. What do you do with that thing?

My uncle traded off a Honda rancher 300 that was 10 years old and it had 43,000 miles on it! They never did anytnnng but change the oil. Oh and they got what they paid for it brand new on trade in. Hard to beat a honda, although their side by sides took a while to catch up to times.

They still haven't caught up. I have a '21 Pioneer 1k5 and they are 10 years behind everyone else, in almost every aspect.

We have 3 SXS's currently. 2-2 seaters and 1-4 seater. 2 are polaris and 1 is a kawasaki. I have owned about everything at one time or another. I totally agree that using a sxs or a quad to travel over the rough stuff is the way to go rather than beating on your only ride home. Like others have said, take your time and you will find a good one. One of our polaris's has over 4k miles and never had a major issue. When looking for a used one always look at the underside for major dents and gashes. Look for rust and also rust on the exhaust. Ask lots of maintenance questions like oil changes and belts. If I was buying used I would not buy anything that was past the first owner. At that point you are just buying other peoples problems. I also do all my own work and maintenance. Feel free to shoot me a PM with any questions . Good luck

I have a 2018 Honda Pioneer 1000-5 that I bought with 120 miles on it. I now have over 7,000 miles on it with out any issues. I know that some of the other brands have a smoother ride, but I ride by myself a lot and in some places that I would be in trouble if I broke down, so I need something very reliable and this has been it....so far! 🤞

I rented a Yamaha Rmax1000 4 seater this year in CO for deer. It had 4500 rental miles on it and ran like a top. Was very impressed with it, truth is as many people make the switch to save their mortgage payment trucks to keep them from getting beat up ( truck and driver ) at half the speed, the roads will get narrower and grown over time. Many places the two tracks used in hunting season only already are and it is getting worse.

Yeah I’ve got a 2014 700-4 pioneer. It’s the only thing I can fit in my icehouse/toy hauler so I’m kinda stuck with it but it rides terrible and it’s gutless compared to a ranger.

Good advice. What’s rust on the exhaust going to indicate?

I honestly want you to buy one, every man or women should own one just like a camp trailor or camper. Carl Malone is going to build a 17 acre super center on the north end of Bellevue thisyear. You might give them a call, I have never seen so many machines in my life as a month ago and I heard they making big deals

I’d have to agree with a lot of this, from the constant dust right down to the I would rather hike ! I’ve got one, plain jane and all beat to heck. It’s never went on one single hunt with me anywhere ! It spends its life full of fencing supplies, and moving cows. Working for its living lol !

Working in fire we use sxs’s. I’ve used every one out there. I’m happy with the talon. I do wish I could do a full enclosure without having to do soft upper doors but the rest works pretty awesome. They do cost a ton to build up with all the accessories but I weighed the pros and cons and cost of a jeep (which I’ve owned) or a older Toyota pickup and for me the SxS is the way to go

You guys realize you can drive these to places to hike right? Some of the roads to trail heads, especially unpopular ones, are either real truck beaters or impassable by truck. Ive got one spot in central idaho that’s about an hour and a half quad ride from where the truck can’t go to the trail I hike into to camp and deer hunt. Technically it’s an old Jeep trail but it’s said that on a map since probably the 50’s so you can guess the level it’s been maintained. Just another way to get around, won’t change a bit how I hunt. Have had a quad forever, my boots still get the most mileage during hunting season

You'll like it, especially if you are out in the desert hunting dogs. They move around so much faster and smoother than a Jeep or little truck. I use mine a lot in the winter. It doesn't have a heater but the Honda's generate enough cab heat, that I don't really need one. The dust sucks, you can minimize it with enclosures, but it's almost impossible to completely eliminate.

The Honda's don't generate enough heat when it's cold out.
Mine was fully enclosed with a heater and you could freeze and then bake in the summer.

Don't be fooled. If it's really cold you will be too.

Bess is tough and doesn't need one. I'm sure he earned his money working hard too. Giving him a compliment because He is a good down to earth guy and was nice to meet me for lunch when I was down I his neck of the woods

Is this where the line starts to punch JP in the face? 😉

I dumped my sxs. Reality is it's cold in the fall and winter.

Toyota is the answer.

Plus, I blend in with the IPA, moustache, and Carhartt crowd in town

I didn't know anyone payed any attention to side x side mileage! I thought you just keep it floored until you run out, then add more!

Don't let them screw you, you don't have to pay 10% more
I’m actually amazed at how much cheaper they are down there. Easily 3-4 k less on average for the same machines up here. I’m not really sure why but it’s worth the drive I know that

What'ya Looking At JP?
I e been looking at a lot of 4 seat generals. I really like them but I also don’t want to spend 30k. The ones closer to 20 all have a fair amount of miles on them. Found a very lightly used rzr xp 4 1000 with all the stuff I’m looking for with 2000 miles on it.

Been looking over a lot of them. This one might be it

Plan on putting clutches in it, or at least rebuilding them. At least that’s been my experience at around 2000 miles.

Carry a fire extinguisher. A few years ago a man burned to death in a SXS at the sand dunes outside Weiser. It caught fire and the passenger couldn't remove his seat belt, driver received 3rd degree burns trying to free his friend and was forced to watch him go up in flames and no fire extinguisher available.
