It's time to derail some of these other threads with all the R vs NR and such and have a post them up like they do on some other forums

So how has wyoming treated you with the big 5?

Moose, goat, sheep, bison and griz? Post them up. I suggest you not post a griz unless it was sold defense and your name had been cleared.

I will start it off.

1st is 2011 Billy. 2nd is 2021 Ram. 3rd is not mine but my dads moose from 2001. I was a young man to be with my dad when he got his moose, it's where I learned to deal with grizzly bears pretty quick and a adventure i will never forget. With 23 points for moose, only got 6 to 8 years before I can draw.

Love it! This thread is going to be awesome! I am a NR with none of the big 5 so I can’t contribute but I will say this: Wy has treated my family very well and I love hunting up there. What a beautiful place!

In 2014 I was very fortunate, I drew a random moose tag in the Wind River Mountains! After looking over quite a few bulls I decided this was the bull I wanted.

In 2020 I was very fortunate in the draw again. I drew a Bison tag! I hunted a lot of days on the forest but ended up taking this bull on the national elk refuge.

Thank you, to everyone who helped me on these hunts.

I'm a NR and decided 20+ years ago that the odds vs cost of drawing a M/G/S/B wasn't worth it, so have never had a tag. Our family has had some great D/E/A hunts though. But looking forward to seeing some of these great animals posted.

Wyoming has treated me more than fair. Started applying in 1999 for sheep and moose.

I waited for my Dad to draw a NR tag for moose first, and he finally caught up to point creep in 2012:

While waiting for him to draw, I continued to go for long shot moose areas since I didn't have max points. At the time I was regretting not drawing when I could have 3-4 years before. My goal was to draw ASAP then start applying again. Felt I left time and points on the table when I drew in 2015, I was the top point holder that drew a tag that year in the unit I applied for. Worked out pretty fair though:

I didn't make the same mistake with sheep. A good friend offered to help me out with sheep in a unit he knows as well as anyone alive. I didn't waste time and points, I wanted a tag so drew in 2019. Took 26 days of hunting, but again worked out pretty well:

Applied for moose in 2020 again after my 5 year wait. Nothing.

Got extremely lucky in 2021 and snagged a random tag in a neighboring unit I drew my first tag in. That worked out really well, killing this bull about 20 minutes into the rifle season after calling it from about a mile:

I have no complaints but wouldn't mind a bison tag.

My two free range Wyoming bison. The first politely ran into Teton Park and died. That's an interesting story.

The second bull was taken with two of my grandsons and SIL on the hunt. It was very memorable and a larger bull than the first. This bull was well within NF boundaries

@DoubleDropMuley havent you gotten something?

Come on guys. Other threads are getting hard to read and follow. We need some cool stuff to look at.

This includes the non residents.

I will share some pics from a 2017 goat hunt. Was actually with a MM member who was a NR. I will not post his success photo, but there was success with a bow. Was a great trip going with a guy you never met. Hiked hard, getting off trail in the dark and walking up in a grizzly packing out. Included a black bear we saw up in goat country. The 5th,6th and 7th picture is the goat that got harvested . I can't recall but I think we saw roughly 24 goats in 2 days.

Nice management moose Buzz…

No Wyoming moose for me, just a scrubby Utah moose…
Thanks for your contribution to the thread about the Wyoming big 5.

The Utah threads are in the Utah section.

Hope more Wyoming hunters share pictures, some good ones so far.

If you could see past your nose, you would know that I didn't post any pic in your precious Wyoming thread...
Good day!

“it's where I learned to deal with grizzly bears pretty quick”

NFH: Let’s hear the story

Well I was 13 years old when my dad had his moose tag. Was a 10 mile ride in with horses to where he had several moose spotted. To sum up the story my dad shot the bull with his bow. We didn't have enough horses to pack out all the meat. So we gutted and left it.

Got to the trailhead and my dad left to call for help. 5 people showed up to help. We all rode in and we had 13 bears in the area. From grizzlies to some black bears hanging back. The bears completely buried the moose. 2 people stayed busy working on the moose while others stood around yelling and making noise to keep bears back. Luckily no shots had to be fired, couple small bluff charges. Actually turned out very well for what could of turned very badily. There was a lot of bears in this area. There is slope thay was near where the bears ear the moths

What a cool experience that was for you...

Wow. Great story. Glad it ended well. hopefully the bears didn't take too much of the meat before you got back.

Could have been an entirely different story if it was just you and your dad vs 13 bears!!

NFH: Thank you! I will likely be elk hunting in unit 58 this fall and your comment had me curious

I had to really dig to find a few pics. I got my moose in 1993 after 17 years of waiting. I kinda got screwed because I had to wait 5 years before I could apply again, and preference points started before I could start to apply. So I'm over 30 years in and still waiting on that second moose. (I know I could draw most areas but I really want to hunt the Snowies.) I will try to dig out and scan a pic or two of him, but it's in a long-lost album. Nothing digital in 1993. He was just under 40 inches but nothing special.

Took me 32 years to draw my sheep license. So I got my ram in 2009. Fun hunt in rugged, majestic country with a super guy that helped me. I shot my ram the first day and we also saw 12 griz that day, pl us over 20 rams. Also had a griz come through camp at night and it spooked the picketed horses. One horse broke his halter and ran off. So we were out in the dark, chasing the horse with headlamps in our undershorts with a griz nearby. The stupidity of that didn't dawn on us till later.

My ram had been run off in a group of 5 by some other hunters. They dropped over the top into some almost impassable, steep rock slides above hoodoos. I shot the ram on the run and he slid backwards about 100-150 yards. We were scared he was going to go clear down and drop over the cliffs, which would have meant a 10 mile horseback ride, followed by a 40-50 mile drive, then another ride and hike to retrieve him. As it was, we had to use two trekking poles to hold him in place for pics. It was scary to get him caped, skinned and cut up on that slope. The rocks were sliding and unsteady, so no way we could move him whole.

After 32 years of waiting, I said I would never apply again. It just didn't seem fair to younger hunters for me to get another sheep while they were waiting for years. So I have never applied again.

I'll see if I can find a moose pic or two. If you look real close in the ram pictures, you can see my butt puckered from the steep slope and unstable rocks in the pics. Haha.
