Uggh…. The season keeps throwing me curve balls. The 4wd on my truck quits working, drive 6+ hours round trip on opening day to get the jeep. Sunday we take the jeep out and my son kills a great buck. My son and wife leave Monday for home leaving me the week to hunt. So Monday night I drive up into a hole where there are usually many deer, never found a monster but with numbers there is a chance. As it is getting dark I am glassing, glassing etc. Decide to call it a little early and voice my way out down the long fought road…
Jump in go to ouch the clutch in and BAMMM! Clutch goes to floor hard.
Crap… I get the tool out and see where the linkage came apart. East fox at first. Couple bolts and little adjustment and things look good again. Jump in ease into the clutch, and Bamm off again. Crap… what is happening?
I crawl back under, notice the driver side motors mount is broke, and the left side of the engine is sitting about 1/2” low and a little back. The clutch pivot is at a weird angle and there is not way to fix in the field. So that night I drive it out without the clutch (thankfully I got rid of the clutch and neutral safety switched years ago).
So I start in gear and drive it back to camp. Since the weather dried out the truck issue has went away. 4wd now works, so I swap all my gear onto the truck for the hunt on Tuesday morning.
Around 4:45am a truck drives into my camp. They holler and I get up just a little ahead of my normal time. They are having vehicle problems, had a mouse chew up the engine harness and had a check engine light and some issues… They had been driving around lost in the oil and gas roads and couldn’t find the highway. They had an early am appointment at a shop in Rock Springs and were desperate to get there.
I told them to let me get dressed and I will head out that way and make sure they get to the Highway.
That was actually good as it got me up and out of camp early and put me into my hunt with time to spare…
I had a plan to spend the day exploring and hunting areas I never have been. Planned to make a couple big loops in new country and explore….
Well at first light I was just loading my pack to leave the truck when I looked up and saw a lope buck that looked decent, I glassed him and saw a deer but in the brush below him. I made a 20 yard move to see the deer. At first I thought no way. But then when the buck picked its head up I knew he was a shooter. I made quick work getting on the sticks and sent a single 130 grain hornady through the pump house.
I then gathered my stuff and went to work.
This is a great buck. He was the fattest buck I have had in years. Tons of fat. He also had some wired feet and left a track that looked like a young moo cow…
Now I am loading up and heading home. I hope the chaos that has been my season is over. I have a pile of vehicle work to do and could use the next couple days to cut meat and fix the issues…
Check out his feet… All 4 were longer than normal. I have a feeling he never left the soft sand…
He was definitely in good shape for winter and rut… I had to peel back the fat just to see the back straps etc…
