The internet shows the area around Flagstaff has fair moisture and the rest of the county is Moderate Drought. Any body have boots on the ground information?

Not looking good based off 90 day and 6 month precipitation reports

Not sure about that map. I live sorta on the edge of that green/blue spot, and it aint green or blue here. It’s been dry and windy across the whole four corners region for weeks now.

Fire restrictions start this week here in sw Colorado. I’m surprised AZ isn’t shut down yet.

It's a 6 month average as compared to 100 years before it. If that part of the state gets any precipitation it's a miracle and it will turn blue or green.

I was commenting on the snowstorm it showed between november and February in the four corners region. That green and blue paints a pretty picture that is grossly misleading.

My point is nothing about the moisture conditions anywhere around here could be considered pretty fair.

We live in Parks (20 miles west of Flagstaff in the heart of 7w) and while it’s not the driest I’ve ever seen it, it’s horrible…
Unfortunately we had a **** winter to follow up one of the better monsoons I’ve seen in the last decade.
The wind has been non stop, and just hoping we don’t burn away before the monsoons hit!
Luckily we still have some dirt tanks with decent water which has given Dan Bradford with Wildlife Water Works a chance to keep up with the trick tanks!
Keep your fingers crossed for another great monsoon!

Yeah, I’m down the road from you in Flag. Been here all my life and I can’t remember a more windy Spring. Everyday, non-stop for weeks!
 
I just saw where they had to cancel some project work for AES and AAF because they were going to Stage II fire restrictions in some areas

We got a couple of inches of rain in Eastern, NM a couple of days ago, at the same time I heard it was snowing in Red River and Taos, temperatures have been nice but we get back into the mid to high 90’s tomorrow. I hope you’re right about the monsoon season.
 
Hoping for a wet summer for the SW. I have the late 7E bull tag, need moisture for antler growth and habitat please rain gods!
 
Eastern AZ. is always better. More Moisture over there. Bulls will be Good this year . It's the preceding year and winter ,what kind of condition their body is in going into this growing season. They had good monsoon last year good fall descent winter. Growth will be fine in the east and rim, west is always last to get monsoon ,but by time even a good monsoon comes most bulls will be what their gonna be. everyone talks about monsoon will finish them , it is to a small degree! good luck this year . Lets see how my proven theory works out I have a great tag and aint worried a bit........................BULL!

Sadly, this one was arson. Some dude with Louisiana plates was seen lighting the fire. He was located and detained. He has since been arrested.

****, it’s in the peaks isn’t it? I feel for the residents more than my elk hun this year for sure. I hope the elk have feed left up in the peaks after this where I’m hunting..
 
I read the report of the guy that started the fire. Homeless from Louisiana. Been camping around the west for a couple months. Took a **** and put a rock on the ****. Lit TP on fire and placed a rock on it. Smoldered for hours without notice then started. He attempted to put the fire out but was unsuccessful. Then fled the scene.

Makes me wonder why that poor homeless guy didn’t just bury it instead of trying to burn it?
Not a smart decision!
 
My brother lives in Flagstaff and my nephew lives in Sedona. I am in Tucson right now, archery bull 6B. Both of them have 2nd hunt archery bull 11M. My nephew got stuck yesterday scouting. Some forest service roads are impassable. Not sure if I remember a wetter monsoon. Everything is green. Lot of standing water. Ground is saturated. Elk are feeding till afternoon. FAT! The elk are spread out. They have feed everywhere. So much water not really using tanks regularly. It is going to be an awesome season! They closed some of the burn areas in 7E & 11M. You can petition to get entry.
 
It is a good year to pull a tag. The bulls are most likely done with antler growth and will be rubbing off in the next 2 weeks, but they are still getting fat.

I feel the same way , and I have a tag. Early rifle Bull 3A 3C. Hope theres one big boy out there...................................Bull!
 
We had a good monsoon in 2015. my bull that year had a hanging weight of 496 lbs. 1993 was a good year too, my bull that year was 535 lbs. 396 lbs cut and wrapped. The butcher bills will be higher this year, LOL.

Only 7 Res. points. Lucky Odds of 1 in 520. 7 Years ago I had 20 points for a unit 10 early rifle tag. in 96 had a unit 1 early rifle tag and only 3 points. Drew a late Kaibab tag 4 years ago with just 7 also ,the one in my avatar. If you wanna win You gotta play. I hunted other States while waiting for tags here in Arizona.,.........................Bull! .....PS Good luck all!

I’ll be over there the entire archery season. I‘ll let you know if we see any giants that we can’t get on with archery equipment. Should be a great rut with the moisture. Getting pretty excited.
 
If you have 4wd and some common sense, you should be fine. Most of the stock tanks & water catchments are FULL! I have been in 7e 3 times since July 1st and in 7w once. The roads in both units are a challenge right now but, give it a few days of sunshine, and you will be cussing the dust. I am extremely thankful for the rain this year. The grass is tall & the elk are fat.
I have an archery bull tag in 7e, and a friend has a rifle Antelope tag in unit 7. Conditions this year are as good as I have ever seen.

I agree, my brother and nephew live there. 4WD a must and be careful. Stay on the road, at least it is packed, do not try to drive around bad areas! Turn around if in doubt. Engage FWD BEFORE you need it. The roads do dry pretty quick when it stops raining.
 
I guess you are not capable of finding a elk on your own. Have to hire some guy and his minions to show you the animals. I have never had a positive encounter with outfitters. They think they own the woods and try to run you off. Outfitting should be banded. If you can’t DIY, STAY HOME.
 
Am I supposed to be impressed? Making money from public lands is immoral. Grazers pay a fee. You suck off the public. I don’t really care about your skill. To you it is just about the almighty dollar. I expect you think Tallman and USA outfitters were justified in their lawsuit. You speak of pride, you might as well hand him the bow or gun too. There’s your elk, shoot it. Ya, take a lot of pride in that. I am not jealous you choose to give you money to leaches on the public lands. Sounds like you are one of them.

I get your point. I don’t agree, but I do respect someone that stands for a principle. Best of luck to you this fall. I’d have a beer with you around a campfire, and we could argue.

Interesting discussion. I actually think it is. One that I see fairly often, and becoming more common.

It demonstrates the diversity in the life style. I think I understand the perspective from both individuals and respect and admire both.

I think it comes from the fact that we all hunt to satisfy a different need. It m’s quite interesting but I believe that need can be and often is completely different for large segments of people.

For example, I’ve have an good friend, now a good old friend. In our younger days, we hunted big game together, a lot. He never filled his tag, ever. He generally would separate early and return to camp about sun down. He was aways happy to share his day in the woods around the camp fire. Like the rest of us he’d be excited about the things he’d seen and critters he’d encountered. As years went by I moved to the US and he stayed in Canada but we stayed close and still visit on occasion. On one particular visit my hunting exploits came up and I asked him if he was stilling hunting much. He said, “no, I haven’t been hunting in many many years. You probably don’t know but I guess I’m a pacifist when it comes to animals, I always have been. I was set back for a second. I said, but you used to hunt all the time. He said, “that’s true I did and I loved it but you probably don’t remember…… I never killed anything.” Had to stop and think for a bit and I could not remember a time when he had, I’d just never thought about it before. (Too self centered I suppose.). I asked him, why did you hunt then. You bought a rifle and back packs, and all the gear and never missed an outing. His answer shocked me and will stick with me forever. He just shrugged his shoulders, grinned and said, “I just didn’t want to be left out of all the fun you guys where having.”

We just never know what drives people into the field. I suppose, if we could break down each persons need, it would be unique to each one of us.

My brother is like that. Get a tag, go find them, get in position and watch them walk away. I’d say “aren’t you going to shoot”. He would just look at me and smile. He just loves being in the field and chasing animals. He just didn’t care about the killing part anymore.
 
My father used to go deer hunting but had no interest at all in killing anything. matter of fact, sometimes he never took his gun out of the case on hunts. He mostly liked the trip, camaraderie and it was a reason to take horses out for a ride.

If hunting was all about the kill, I would have quit 40+ years ago. So many things I enjoy about hunting more than the kill itself. Anymore, I'm rarely disappointed when I come home with a tag in my pocket.

I will. I am not a fan in general, but they can be of help. In 2015 I was in North Dakota working in the oilfield from 2011 to 2016. Got drawn in unit 10 early rifle bull. Never been there and no time to scout. Great help! Been back living in AZ. since Jan. of 2016. retired 2 years ago and am in S. Carolina staying with girlfriend for 4 months this summer. Got drawn early rifle bull again in 3A 3C . Never hunted it . I know unit 1 and 27 and 21, and down south. At last minute I hired an outfitter this year too. At 66 it is great help packing out and learning the unit. I have lived in AZ. since 1977 and have my fav. units but put for a great hunt not expecting to draw with odds of less than 1 % Thats how they can help. And for old Farts like me with hunting knowledge but can't lift chit anymore. These are 2 of the best elk hunts in America, why waste it.................BULL!
 
Yep, makes perfect sense, for some and no sense for another and neither need to have to defend their decision to anyone. Hope you and your hired help have a great hunt.

I work in a very busy technology career field, and my time off is limited. I can usually take a week or so off at a time, but I usually don’t take off much longer than that at a time.

1. Drew a tag, in a good unit and it’s far from home- Don’t have the time to scout and do the tag real justice. Want to maximize the time that I have during the hunt.

2. I didn’t get much in the draws, and I want another hunt for that year- Book a hunt with a guaranteed tag

3. Native reservation, or private land that cannot be accessed except with an outfitter.

4. To Learn from an expert at their craft- This one is often missed IMO from people that Poo Poo going with a guide. I’ve learned to hunt Turkeys, to fish, polished my Deer hunting, and predator hunting skills by hunting with experts who do it more in one year, than most can do in their lifetime. If you go in with this a goal, you can elevate your own skill level dramatically.
 
Steve Chappell sure seems like an all around great guy and his calling sounds amazing on his videos. 23 can be amazing when the calling action is good. I hope it is for you. Good luck finding a giant and being able to pass up some others to do so.

It rained on me for 7 days on my Antelope hunt in 10. 3 elk tag was where the Elk sportsman tag bull was shot earlier this month so good luck.
