I called several photographer friends that I knew were in the area and we surrounded her. Fully expecting to get the snot kicked out of us, when we approached she fell into a little ditch where the wires sticking out sideways were stuck into the ground. In her panic she managed to back out of the cage on her own. No harm, no foul, but I'm told it's fairly common for deer to get trapped in tomato cages.

Fortunately the welds on those are pretty crappy so she was bound to tear it up eventually. I had a little buck around here a couple years ago that had a big wad of that nylon mesh from an erosion log stuck in his horns. Never could get a good picture of him.

The antlered ones are very adept at getting stuff wrapped in their headgear.

Named this buck "Killer". Killer is on his way back to his does after dispensing of another (bigger) buck. Notice his right G4. See the red? That's blood. He flipped his opponent onto his side using leverage. His uphill position gained him advantage over the bigger buck; who landed into a small depression with some mahogany on the backside; preventing escape. "Killer" immediately went for the stomach area and skewered the larger buck with his right side G3 and G4. He wouldn't let the other buck up and relentlessly kept pushing and lunging while his antlers were still inside the poor victim of his anger. We could hear the buck bawling as this was going on. Reliving this story right now kinda gives me chills. You want to help the losing buck, but there's really nothing a person can do. Of course, we both videoed the fight. Fights of this nature are rarely seen. I've been videoing and taking pictures for over 2 decades and have only seen maybe 6 or 7 true fights. Dominance is usually settled through posturing. Killer finally let the other buck up and he hauled ass...kinda. Looked like he had a broken rear leg, and blood all over his stomach area. He dies from those injuries.

I think he was born somewhere here in the yard, as he and his mom hung around when he was little. That morning those 2 bucks cruised thru, and he was brave enough to walk right up and say howdy.

I thought the bucks might kick him or shoo him away as they usually do, but they didn’t show any aggressive behavior at all. The whole thing lasted about 5 minutes.:)

The fawns aren’t little anymore so they are bouncing around here like ping pong balls, so harder to get pictures of. I’m not a video guy because I always seem to screw up the good stuff.

Some sacrifices are definitely justified. Beef tastes better anyway. LOL
