Can anyone provide field report for how impacted the Kooskia and Kamiah areas are from the EHD outbreak?

I hunted a unit adjacent to 10 this year and the impact where I hunted was pretty severe. I found at least 20 carcasses with 3 being mature bucks. From previous experience in the unit, I would estimate that herd where I was hunting was reduced by at least 25%. That being said, I was still able to find a good amount of deer and the impact was definitely more severe at lower elevations. Attached below are a couple of the mature bucks I found this year. I hunted Oct. 10-15.

Personally I think I’d eat the doe tag. White tails haven’t had the best year. To each his own

I tend to agree with this sentiment. Shooting a buck would be a better option if you can. We need those does to pop out twins and triplets for a couple years.----SS

I have never shot a doe and never will. No shade on those with different views. I’ll only shoot 8pt or better.

Going to my usual spots but will move either up country or over by Whitebird if it seems to bleak.

Losses on Unit 8 appear significant as well. I’m seeing far less deer now than early summer. I’m in the Viola area. Know of at least a dozen dead on south side of Moscow Mt. Kamiak Butte just across border on Palouse lost a lot too, so I assume it’s quite wide spread in 8 and probably 8a too.
Kids and I will be bucks only this year, to give em a lil break.
Bummer… as they were really coming back from bad winters and previous EHD events a few years back. Mother Nature is a cruel *#*^ sometimes.

Finishing our time in Kooskia area. Die if had a definite impact. Talked to locals w some sad reports of immense die off early Oct. Usual town deer are mostly gone. We went into neighboring units and found my buddy his first. A small but clean 8pt. We saw 5 other small 8pts, I let them all walk. Has a gear last morning watching a very mature sow w 3 rambunctious Cubs, fat off fall carrion.

This will take a few years to recover from. Was frustrating watching some does get killed.

Well, I went up to unit 8 to try my hand at whitetails, I had that extra doe tag plus a whitetail only tag. Shot this buck on the first evening I was there. Saw quite a few, and there were tracks everywhere so it looks like the particular area I was in didn’t have any major die offs

Great buck Andrew! It's great to hear a good report. From my understanding, EHD is all about water sources. These pockets of deer like you found will be the key to the rebounding the herd.
