Before anything else, the big takeaway from this hunt was the help we got from our friend Jeff. Going into a new unit is hard and Jeff pointed us in the right direction and was always there to bounce ideas off of. And once the bull was down him and his 14 year old son hiked up the mountain, and down the other side to help us pack it out.
Its great to help folks and it sure is nice when you get help also.
Lots of stress on a hunt like this. 14 points invested, Son's Work has him busy so getting away is never easy and a unit we had never set foot in. Summer backpacking trip planned never happened so we just got after it.
I got there day or so early and all I accomplished was where not to go, and, that all helps, but, it sure is better to find the bull.
One thing we have learned is that elk have different tendencies in different areas. This unit was no different. Once we figured them out, we started getting into them.
Found this bull early in the morning bedded. Sat on him for over an hour and a half. When the sun was finally going to get in his eyes Zach took the shot while bedded. I was almost 700 yards away keeping an eye on the bull with my binoculars and I just could not make a large bull out of him by only seeing his tops. This was one time when the bull got way bigger when I got there.
Need less to say, we were happy to get a first day bull a couple days into the hunt.
