A little early but thought I'd get this going. Was in central Idaho opening day and although I saw elk, nothing would talk. I did get into a group of cows in the evening and heard regular cow talk but no bugles.
 
Nobody should waste there time until at least the 10th, too hot, no bugles, bulls are silent and holed up in the deep dark stuff. You would be smart to save your vacation time for later…
 
update... had good bugling action Friday the 3rd with two bulls in one canyon. almost sealed the deal but i moved in mid day and a wind swirl screwed me. my wife shot a bull on Saturday the 4th that we got to bugle however it was very light and timid. he still came in once we closed the gap though. 12 yd frontal and he was down in 10 yds.

What's the smoke around Salmon/Stanley area like? I'm heading out for that country Friday.
 
Damn. Not as much worried about the smoke for my elk as I am for my sons limited entry deer hunt that starts on Sept 15th just west of the town of Salmon.
 
Getting lots of action with calls but it seems the bulls are herded up now and are pushing cows from other sounds. And other cows don't like unfamiliar cow sounds so they pull the bulls away from stranger danger. Bottom line is they are getting call shy in my area. I saw three raghorns about 800 yds across a canyon and they would flat run up the mountain they were on when I would call. Must have been saying something mean to them or something.

Work is pulling me a way but I'll give it one more weekend effort to see if we can adjust and get it done. I wish I was up there today as today is the day.

Good luck if you are going out, I'm sure it will be action packed if you can get into them.
 
Bulls are bugling but…. They’ve heard so many calls imo from hunters that they push away the other direction when hunters think they are gonna “primos” one in. We watched it first hand a couple nights ago with a hunter calling non stop.
 
Been up in my area all week. Back home to stock up then back out. It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before in this spot. Not bugling at all, wolves howling every morning. I’ve hunted up here a bunch and there’s always been wolves but this is the first time I’ve personally experienced them changing elk behavior this radically. I’ll be up there till the end of the season now but I think I just have to hope to get close enough that a rag horn try’s to sneak in to me quite. Ive put the bugle away and am just doing whisper quite cow calls now and then to try and make that happen. The elk are still there but you can hear a pin drop. When the wolves aren’t going go that is...

maybe it was quite all over? kid at my work had some pretty good action in the pioneers but didn't connect. i know in my area the rifle hunters should slay them here when it opens because those elk certainly were not rutting in September.
 
I didn't hear a peep in September while I was scouting. I know a couple guys that are hunting an early rifle tag right now and they said that its starting to get going the last day or two.

Seems like the last several years I've got into more bugling action in Oct than Sept.

I’ve seen the same thing. Why I dont even go hunting any earlier then the 16th for elk. Kind of worries me. I kill a bull every year but it’s the action that I go for. I have zero desire to hunt elk with a rifle. I guess maybe I could buy the rifle tag and hunt with my bow but I live for September
 
We were out scouting for my wife's upcoming bull tag, spent the night halfway up south mnt, didn't hear anything, we will be heading back for the hunt soon, hoping to have some luck! Good luck to everyone else
 
I think that early September rut action is always hit and miss. It could be one draw or canyon is hot, and the next one over has bulls feeding together. I spent the first few days struggling to get into elk with only a couple bugles. Then on September 6th I found a hot bull and had him down by 7am. I always try to hit that early season hard because you may finally find that one bull that just turned on.
