I'm waiting around for the year to start. Came across a "hate barbary" thread and got to wondering if your trophy rooms are giving you some motivation while you wait to go hunting? Post some pics of your rooms and mounts if you are willing. I'm gonna put some family ones up if you are interested. All trophies to me and mine

Always motivated. Nothing really to post - my trophy room has euros, fish and some great old prints, EdWards mostly.
Trophies hanging in local business owned by a friend.

Not a trophy hunter.

Admire awesome trophy rooms though!

I have photos taken over the years, but they're really old & not so great. And I don't have the energy to take new ones. It might be a bit confusing because these don't show all the added mounts and rearranging that's been done. So one thing might be somewhere different from one photo to another.

This first bunch is my first trophy room. This one of the later photos taken through the entry from the living room, which once was a 6'-wide sliding door prior to me building the room. AZ blackbear rug on the wall with my grandfather's Parker Bros. 10 ga. A few pronghorns from the different states, a TX whitetail & AZ coues buck & a gemsbok backskin on sofa.

The two bears hides & lion hide on the table were supposed to be lifesized mounts but I ruined the hides, along with a lifesize blackbuck & javelina. These were the original owners of a couple of them.

Photo from the entry to the right. 5X6 elk antlers in corner and horns from a Santa Cruz Island Merino ram on the table atop a hairless deer hide. Fish over bear is a 14# brown trout, Alaskan pike upper right is 23 lbs. That's a bobcat rug on the wall and just the very bottom of a BC mountain caribou showing.

BC 60" Canada moose, Alaskan caribou, MO whitetail & my 1st AZ mule deer. The two exotic sheep behind the moose are a Corsican and a black Hawaiian. The antlers below & right of the moose belonged to a small 4x4 mulie.

Wall over the entry -- NWT central barren ground 'bou to the left and an AK barren ground in the middle. Lower left is my first Coues deer (1969), a javelina and 3.5# grayling from a river that runs into Great Bear Lake, NWT. Whitetail is from MO, mulie is my first mule deer buck, killed in 1962.

A mountain lion hide drapes the chest and a blackbuck hide covers the end table. That's a Russian boar in the upper left next to my best mulie buck, which is hung next to a mulie doe my son killed when he was 10. Antlers on the lamp shade are a blacktail buck (CA). Buck above it is from TX.

The small birds in the alcove below are a chukar (upper right), ringneck and a male & female Mearns. There are bear skulls, blackbuck horns, a couple small whitetail racks and Mexico Coues deer rack scattered about. The turkey is an eastern from MO, but I didn't do anything with the Merriam's, Rio Grande, Osceola or Gould's that I also killed over the years. The 23-lb. northern pike is from the Hotlitna River in Alaska.

These are of the newer addition I built several years ago as a family/trophy room to house my African, New Zealand and misc. critters. I often refer to it as the Marc Plunkett Gallery since he had mounted nearly everything in it when these photos were shot.

Hey Mr. Mandile, just wanted you to know how big of an influence you have been in my life since I was a little kid reading your articles about the outdoors. Thanks for helping steer me in the direction my life has gone. I get to watch my 3 girls grow up shooting quail in the desert, mule deer in the meadows and elk on the ridges. You sir are who I wish to be someday and thanks for sharing so much of your life with folks like me!

Yup, about 60 years of memories. It's really weird how I can look at one of the mounts & recall about every detail, but I can't remember what I had for dinner last night or why I go into the bathroom.

I missed a few things that I don't have photos of: a lion rug on the family room floor, a Catalina goat & a mountain caribou & some antlers/horns that are elsewhere in the house. I also had several elk & deer racks stolen in the '70s when we lived in CO & came to AZ for a Thanksgiving with my parents.

I've never been a 'tape-measure' type of hunter. So many of my mounts are merely legal critters, many of which were first or only one of a kind. When I hunted Africa, the guide told me he would guarantee anything I shot would make the SCI books. I told him all I was just interested in shooting a decent representative animal. So that's what we did, I was pleased with the result.

There's only one thing in both those rooms that has been officially scored; nothing else has even been measured except for a spread or such.

The lone exception is the blacktail antlers that are in the first photo on the wall below the antelope. I killed it on a private ranch near Eureka, CA that was owned by two brothers who were just getting started. Holt Bodinson from SCI was also there. So he scored all of the bucks we killed & the brothers paid the $25 ea. to enter them in the books for the publicity.

Thanks, Kyle. I appreciate the kind words. Cherish the days with your daughter because both of you will eventually grow old & have only faint memories of the times you spent together now.

My three kids are all in the latter half of their 50s now, and because of my health issues we no longer enjoy the outdoors together. So all I have left now are those memories. ☹️

PS: My late father was 'Mr. Mandile'; I'm Tony. ;)

Some really impressive stuff, Buzz. The antelope collection is something else. I'm envious because I love hunting them. So here's the humorous part -- I've never hunted them in the pronghorn capitol of the world -- Wyoming. Mine came from AZ, MT, CO & NM.

I always wanted one of those aoudads but never explored hunting them in Texas until I wasn't able to climb around anymore. :ROFLMAO:

I have a new opinion of you….. I had a few of my grandfathers mounts scored by Homer years ago because I thought it would be neat to get his name in the book before he died (one of them did) but I havent scored anything for myself. I‘ve had 4 deer, an elk, and some birds mounted but as I get older I just don’t care anymore…. Unless it’s a sheep or something very unique I won’t bother anymore….. would like to have some more tanned hides though.

We do have a “wall of shame” in the barn though for all the meat bucks we’ve killed over the years…. Having the smallest buck is almost as prestigious as having the largest lol.

I guess I was more of a collector than a trophy hunter. I wanted to get as many different mammal, fish & avian species as I could. One time, I had a variety of fish, waterfowl & birds in my freezer when we went on our annual trip to Mazatlan, Mex. It contained the skins of a big Apache trout, 72-lb King salmon, 10.5 lb. largemouth, a 15-lb silver salmon, a lion skull & a full Merriam's turkey. The freezer went kaput while we were gone & everything in it was rotten when we got home. Of course, the smell was enough to gag a maggot.

Other things that never got to the taxidermist were CA blacktail cape & the full hides for lifesize mounts of two huge black bears, a mountain lion, a blackbuck, & javelina. All of these had already been tanned, but I didn't have enough money to get them all mounted at once. They all went in black trash bags and into a closet for storage. I figured they would be fine since they had already been tanned. Then I pretty much forgot them for too long. I was wrong; the tanning oils dried out, meaning they would likely tear when stretched over the forms. I really wanted the lion done because it was so big. I even had a taxidermist test it; he soaked a leg & tried to stretch it. No go. So now it's draped over a coffee table.

I had also planned on having my Osceola turkey from Florida mounted lifesize. The Seminole tribe was to ship it to me overnight, which they did a couple weeks later. Problem was they required a signatiure on delivery. I was off on another trip somewhere & my wife was at work. She called UPS the next morning & someone told her the package was really smelling bad. She told them to toss it. :mad:

I'm building what my wife thinks is a garage for her car, but I have a different idea :)

Will have a mezzanine up on the one side over the work bench with my couple elk mounts right over where she would park if I let her in there.

All very nice trophy rooms. What thickness of plywood do you need behind the sheet rock 1/2" or 5/8" to hold mule deer or elk shoulder mounts Thanks

According to the Serialization Book compiled from Parker Brothers stock books, your gun appears to be a rare Grade 2 36" Damascus steel barrel 10-gauge lifter action Parker with straight grip stock....

Rare, like not many made in that configuration. It makes Parker guys like me just go crazy. There were 12 10-gauge Grade 2 lifter Parkers made with 36" Damascus steel barrels according to our Serialization Book reference.

It was my granpa's, but he didn't come to the U.S. until the early 1900s when he was 13. The Parker was made in the early 1870s. So he obviously acquired it 2nd hand somewhere.

When I was a pre-teen, I remember seeing it once wrapped in cloth & tucked into the back of a closet. I never saw it again until I drove back to NJ sometime in the 1980s & asked about it. My uncle who still lived at home with my granddad dug it out & gave it to me to take home. I doubt it had moved since the first time I laid eyes on it.

Though they hunted small game & deer when I was growing up, they used newer side-by-side 12 ga. doubles. I once owned one of my uncles' 1940s vinatge Fox doubles but sold it in the late 60s for $175. It would be worth at least $2k today.

thanks Marley I hope to be building next summer. It sure will make it a lot easier to hang mounts where ever. Hope everybody has a great fall hunting

What color kelvin lights are everyone using? Any sort of diffusers or spot lights that work best for lighting up your trophy's? I have 4 - 2' x 4' 4000K led panels I'm suspending from the ceiling then want to add two 4 can track lights on either side of the one panel I have up in the pic below. Will have one elk between the upper windows and another over the upper right corner of the tv.

I suck at hunting, so I only have those two elk that I will hang up for now, but need some directional track lights to fill in without glaring on the big screen. Just curious if anyone has ever really put much thought into this part of the game.

The hanging down flat panel looks dumb in my opinion. Why not go with 4 flush mount flat panels? That would look clean. They almost look like skylights after install. At this point I wouldn’t recommend cans if you’re in an area that gets a lot of snow and there isn’t a floor above. The heat loss would potentially cause ice issues leading to roof problems down the road.
 
Awesome trophy rooms everyone! I plan to turn a room into a trophy room, but it won’t have very tall ceiling. Wondering if anyone had thought of a clever way to maximize space and still hang a bunch of shoulder mounts in a room without high ceilings?

Also, do you think ship lap boards on top of existing sheet rock would support multiple mounts, even without hitting the backing stud? Anyone done this?
