Fishing around Lovell

So on June 4th-6th my son has a Baseball tourney in Lovell. Never been to that area of the state and looking forward to exploring.

I was wondering is anyone wanted to share places to fish. I know Bighorn Lake is there... But my son is wanting to start fly fishing. He is only 11 and I am hoping that we could find a mild section of river for him to learn on and have some success. Preferably off the beaten path a bit so the fish are not super spooky etc.

Anyone mind sharing a few pointers? If not we can always hit the lake and toss lures...

So you have the causeway out on highway 14A. Catifish is good at night. Then you got the yellowtail habitat to fish to.

Deaver reservoir isnt but 15 min away. Been a busy place lately.

I would look into a Montana fishing license so you can head up to horseshoe bend and bearings landing. I am not a fisherman but back in September we took a boat through devils canyon. About the best way to fish. I caught some nice bass.

I actually work over in lovell. Not much for food and motels. Most people stay in powell and cody.

The runoff has the Shoshone river water dirty so i wouldnt even attempt that

And also have pond 5. Quick easy access. Takes less than 10 minutes to drive to. Holds bluegill, trout and small mouth bass. Watch for rattlesnakes

Thanks a ton for the updates that gives us a good starting point. I will let you know what we end up doing. It looks like the area is more desert and dry than I expected. I was thinking it was high country streams etc. But we can have fun with bass and catfish etc.

Well, you can run up the mountain and start following a stream. They're about all full of starving bookies.

No size, but fun fishing.

Thanks, I am not familiar with the mountains at all, but I will research a few places where we might get a few flies in...

Lots of brookies on top but they are opening up highway 14a soon and come june I would assume a lot of snow to still be up there. Some spots could be possible. Hard to say unless you drive up there

Well any luck @elks96 ?
So we did have a little luck. The river at the causeway was rocking and rolling muddy and derby. So we passed on it. We ended up going north into MT to the board ramp where they load and unload. It was crazy busy, but we found 2 little areas where we could sneak down to the water edge. Even at the ramp water was really dark but the coves we found had fresh water coming in and each had about 20 yards cleaner water and then 40 yards of tainted before it mud. We fished the cleaner waters for about 3 hours and caught a dozen plus Smallies and one good cat on some plastics. That evening we fished the ponds in that yellow tail wildlife area and got nothing at all but mosquito bites and lots of locals…

mom Sunday before heading home we went above Shell falls and tried going into a couple lakes but the gates were still closed. We ended up finding a good stretch of river/creek away from everyone. Had a lot of fish but they were super spooky and not hungry.

the river was beautiful and we were alone for a couple hours teaching my sone to toss a fly.

Thanks again for the pointers…We saw Bighorn Sheep, Ferral horses, Moose, Black Bear, Whitetail, mule deer, turkeys, and elk…
