If you could build your ultimate sheep gun what would you build? For me it would be.

Remington or clone action

26in proof barrel 7wsm 1-8 twist

Timney 517 trigger

Manners carbon fiber stock one of the hunting flavors.

Mine is the first rifle I ever bought forty some years ago. Ruger M77 tang safety in 270 Win. Nice wood stock. New barrel a couple years ago and added a Swaro Z3 scope. Shoots sub moa, should work fine. Now I just need a sheep tag!!!

My dream sheep rifle is a Rem 700 ADL (blueprinted) with a lightly fluted #2 Lilja barred chambered in 280AI chopped at 24", Brown Precision Kevlar stock and topped with a Swarovski 3-10 with TDS but I've only killed 1 sheep with this rig so far.

I've shot more sheep over the years with a 300 Win set up with a fiberglass Brown Precision stock than anything else. Next in line is the std 280 Rem (3) and I've also killed a couple each with a 270 Win and a 6.5 x 280AI.

Please add field ready weight.
Used my 7mm WSM on my 2 hunts this last year, but at 14.5 lbs field ready it got heavy on my second hunt. Thinking of setting up my Browning Mtn Ti in 270 WSM next.

I've been fortunate to go on 5 sheep hunts with a permit in my pocket. 3 of my 4 sheep were taken with a stock Browning A bolt in a 300wsm. The last was taken with a sweet little "man bun" (6.5 CM) put together by none other than the "Zekester" himself. All four sheep died within a few steps of where they were shot, and none of the shots were excessively long. (under 400 yds.)
To me the "dream sheep rifle" could be just about any reasonable mild recoiled, flat shooting caliber. That could include a muzzle break, if needed, and a barrel 24" or less. My ultimate requirement for a sheep gun is something wrapped in a light package...under 7lbs. (like the ones I have carried in sheep country) And most important, it must consistently shoot very straight! So to me, many rifles could be a dream sheep gun!

If I ever draw that last sheep tag, it’ll probably be the 25-06. But it would be a great excuse to put together that 280 AI I’ve been wanting.

MOA 300 PRC, lightest gun I own. One shot drop on an auodad at 563...getting close to drawing a bighorn tag.
Specs:
McMillan game hunter carbon stock
Benchmark carbon barrel
MOA 4.0 action
NX8 4-32 MOA FFP
Weight: 9lbs 2oz...half moa or better to 800.

I just had a custom gun built similar to what you're describing. TS Customs did the build. Had it built because I'm optimistically thinking I'll get a sheep tag and a few other great tags in the next 5 to 10 years.

Specs:
280 ai
Proof Sendero Lite 26-inch 1:8.4 twist barrel
Lone Peak Ti action
McMillian carbon fiber stock
Leupold 3-17x44

Weighs 8.2 lbs with scope and rings.

Pass the sheep tags...I'll make due with anything that's under 15 lbs and can hit a pop can at 150 yards.

But, this one is pretty much right where I like to be...700 in 7-08 tricked out a bit.

Another 700 that would work in a pinch, big brother to the above in 7 RM:

Killed one ram with each rifle so far...I'd slum either again.

That's, Buzz, true but sheep hunts are so special and rare that having a rifle that adds to MY adventure and pleasure of the hunt is high on the list for many....even you....and I KNOW your accuracy demands are higher that you proport and look at your tricked out rifles! You have them because they're better, they add to your experience and because you can afford them.... and Lord knows you shoot them well.

I certainly don't look down my nose at a guy using his old deer/elk rig at all but a semi-dedicated "sheep-rifle" is pretty sweet too.

HaHa...true.

But if someone said you can only have a sheep tag if you agree to shoot a 12 lb rifle capable of 2 moa accuracy...

I'll take my chances with that rifle, all...day....long.

Built it actually... just waiting on the tag ??‍♂️

6.5x47 lapua

Bighorn tl3 action
24in Bartlein barrel
SS rifles stock
Jewel trigger
NF nx8 2.5-20x50
Talley 20moa base
Talley rings

144 Berger hybrids at 2785 FPS with a pinch of Varget getting an ES of 4

I have taken them with a pre-64 Win Model 70 in .300 Win Mag, my tried and true Sako 85 in .270 Win, and the last one with a Sako Finnlight in .300 WSM (also took a mountain goat with that rifle).

I have pretty much decided the Finnlight is my mountain rifle from here on out. 7 1/4 lbs all rigged out, fits me perfectly, and a joy to shoot.

It's sure fun to have this "rifle talk" but the fact is that sheep rifle are way more common than sheep hunts/tags.

I don't personally shoot the uber-light rifles quite as well as the ones with a bit of mass (especially under real-world conditions) so I've never tried to shave off every single ounce that I can... but the lighter ones are a dream to carry since the usual sheep hunt consists of lots of carrying and just one (1) shot.

You know me, Zeke. I'm very weight sensitive, since I carry more than I should on the old bod. Plus old age sucks, and physical decline seems impossible to stop these days. Therefore, light is good!
That little CM you built me was a dream the last go round.

If in' I ever get another sheep tag, we will have to go back to the drawing board, just for fun!

Bansner in 7 WSM. 4 sheep already with it and hopefully #5 from WY in September. And no I don’t have all 4. Too cheap to buy my desert. ?

I have my dream sheep rifle. Remington Model 700 in 7mm Mag. It’s also my caribou, moose, musk ox, mountain goat, elk, deer, pronghorn, grizzly/brown bear rifle...

boring I know!
