I debating on burning my points next year. Looks like with 7 going in for 1st season, I may draw? Curious what others have drawn out with.
 
I've been debating on going ahead and burning my 20 NR points on 76 archery or holding out for 61, although with creep I'm not any closer than I was to 61 5 years ago.

Question on 76.... can you hunt it effectively in archery without horses? I've hunted 77/78 to the south and I've done best when I've been able to get to the back country on horses. 61 I feel like I could pull of a successful (or at least enjoyable) DIY hunt with no horses, which is one of the things that has me wanting to hold out. Thoughts on trying to tackle 76 on foot?

Same dilemma for me in 2017. I burned my 17 NR points on 76 instead of waiting for 61. I hired an outfitter to dropcamp me 9 miles deep. So worth it and would do it again in a second. Won best photo of the year here on MM with my bull.

hey chubby, what did that drop cost if you dont mind sharing the info?
 
My experience during archery season in 2017 was that most drainages I hunted, the elk were near treeline. A couple of the areas you could day hunt from the road and others were best to backpack in a couple hours. I didn't have horses but an ATV was pretty essential as many of the roads would be tough to take a regular 4 WD. Small jeeps would work but I didn't plan to hike in further than I could backpack so horses sure would not be "required". I heard some of the drainages I looked at that probably would have needed horses were pretty busy with horse camps. The unit is pretty big but from others I've talked to, horses would not be necessary to find good hunting.
 
Horses definitely not necessary. I have hunted or helped 3 diy hunts in this unit and have killed 3 nice bulls less than a 30 minute hike from the road. One in archery and 2 in 1st rifle. If you hunt the west sw side of the unit horses would be great for getting back into the wilderness but for the rest of the unit not needed imo.

A bunch of these fellers have seen bigfoots and I saw an ostrich outside Cortez once, so sure I can buy a speedgoat. :rolleyes:

That clearly shows 17 points for the early rifle tag, so you burned an additional 5 points to draw. And if you didn’t see a single bull on the early rifle hunt that’s brutal. As a resident the regular 1st rifle can be drawn with 6-7 points. Without much effort you should be able to turn up a lot of elk with some decent bulls. Hunted it once and out glass on about 70 bulls before I killed one. Also I believe the southeast corner of the unit could hold some antelope.

in the south east corner. And I never said you “need” 22 points. But clearly i drew it with 22. And let’s see your bull from 61 this year if you are such a great hunter ?
 
If you guys notice that screen shot is for EARLY rifle bull, Not first rifle. So it may take 22 res points for the EARLY hunt.
That being said, I have never seen antelope in 76 either. I have though seen elk and bulls every time I have been in the unit. Even just scouting around on the atv. If you cant find a bull (even a little one) during early season or first rifle, Your doing something wrong.

I'm currently sitting on 20 points as a non-resident. I would absolutely love to hunt 61 but with point creep and being 63 years old I'm leaning towards 76. I've hunted Unit 74 around Silverton 4 times so I know what I'm getting into. I try to stay in shape and ran a half marathon on my 63rd birthday. I know Unit 40 is an option but really can't afford an outfitter. I was going to hunt 76 a couple years ago but got derailed by a shoulder issue. Definitely sitting in no mans land with 20 points.

Having spent a little time in both units, I would say 61 is a little easier altitude and terrain. That being said, I would have horse packer on speed dial in both units for the pack out at our ages.
My son should draw 61 first rifle this year and has never shot a bull.
 
I'm new to MM and in the same situation as many with 20 NR points and considering 76. Looking at drop camps right now as I will be alone on the trip. Anyone have any recommendations on an outfitter?
 
I have 15 NR points and was looking at archery. However after looking at the odds it looks like I'm still a year or two behind the curve. Am I looking this correctly.

076 is definitely huntable without horses. I’ve hunted 77, 78, and 76, IMO 76 is way easier terrain than units to the south.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm going to start focusing my attention there if I don't gain any ground on 61 here pretty quick.
 
Didn't Ash Tulley buy Jake Powell's business? If that is the same guy and he hunts the same area it will be on the extreme Eastern edge of 76 that borders 79. On my way to my spike camp I used to hike past Jake's camp on Farmer's Creek. He also had a camp further up the same trail where he could hunt the bottom edge of Wason Park. Those areas are fairly popular with DIY hunters on horseback (esp. the Denver guys), but it is still good elk country.

I’d hunt it on foot, if you have access to an atv bring it. There’s atv trails all over the unit
