what is your favourite hunting dog

My personal favorite hunting dog is the German Shorthaired Pointer. They are the most versatile breed in my opinion their style and grace are topped by none in my opinion. The only con I could ever complain about is the hyper fits of non stop energy. I operate a small kennel in Illinois and have a great success. I breed for results not $. The dog below is Rooster my male.

Chesapeake man here, only breed I've owned for the last 41 + years, as a avid waterfowler, they are a good fit.

I switched from GSP to GWP about 12 years ago, they hunt at a gentleman’s pace opposed to the fast pace of the GSP.

Depends what you're looking for, where you live, etc... I love GSP's but if you're looking for an all around hunter, pet, house dog, companion its awful tough to beat a good 'ol Lab

I hunt over a Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer and a Pudelpointer. Great family dogs as well as incredible field dogs.

Awesome topic - lots of great pictures and gorgeous dogs!!! Haven't heard of a Slovakian Rough Haired... crazy. My grandpa owned and trained great German Shorthairs. He loved quail hunting. For almost 30 years - owned black labs & love the Candlewood line.
I guess I have about three more good dogs in me=people years.

Still has his VGP to do this year. I am new to the German dog clubs and its a learning experience every day. I was a lab guy before Duke. My last lab was a pointing lab out of Tiger Mountain Pointing labs. But my grandpa raised Shorthairs his entire life. So I was told my my training buddy/trainer. That a Drahthaar was like having and shorthair and a Lab combo. All the go like a Shorthair and the calm loving part of a Lab. Able to come inside the house and sit calmly but go Mach ten in the bird field and have no problem in the cold water. So far he is a great addition to the family !

I've been around WPG's and GWP's all of my life. They definitely have the heart of a lion and can be their own worst enemies! It sounds like you have fantastic lines on your Drat. It's hard to beat a good GSP in the field, but some of them don't have an off button. My Pudelpointer has a lot of the same characteristics of a GWH. The Slovak is an entirely different dog. He has the characteristics of a hard headed Weim.

Both ends of the spectrum from a GWP, all out hunter in the field and family dog at the house.

You can’t beat a lab for an all around dog. From hunting to family dogs, they can do it all. I’ve got 2 currently. My female is the sweetest mild dog in the house, plays with my 2 year old all day long and is the kindest, patient, soft dog you could ask for in a setting with kids. Shes very protective over him too. But outside in a hunting situation shes got more drive and heart than any other dog I’ve personally seen. I got them primarily for family pets, hunting is secondary, but they both great for everything.

I have a black lab now, and he is a great dog. Before him I had Treeing Walkers and Blueticks. There’s nothing like following a good coonhound at night. I had to stop unfortunately because the dogs don’t see property lines and go wherever the raccoons go. After numerous issues with property owners, I decided to stop running dogs.

I grew up with labs, but currently have a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. Much different from a lab, more like a cattle dog in temperament.

Bodie!

She tracked this elk that was shot in the liver and only left a few drops of blood in the dry dusty soil in the brush lined timber on a 90 degree day. We would have lost the elk without her.

At less than 2 years old and having never been on a deer or elk trail she sorted out the tracks of 20 or so cows and trailed the wounded one 5 minutes after putting her on the trail that was 2 or 3 hours old!

She has a SH pass in the only hunt test she ever entered when she was 1-1/2.

She is the best waterfowl dog I've ever hunted over and there's been a couple good ones!

From her first duck hunt at 11 months....

To her most recent...

Great house dog with an off switch and VERY protective.....but I am biased.

Love this thread! There's a few breeds on here that I had never even heard of. Kind of surprised no one has chimed in with any lion hounds? Those are some of the most persistent hunting dogs I've ever seen.

Mine is just a pack out companion, but I wouldn't trade her for anything.

Haven’t had a hunting dog that I didn’t absolutely love. Weimer that was an absolute machine on wild roosters! GSP that was textbook bird dog, Vizsla that was a killer on roosters and and absolute sweetheart. My current is a drahthaar that honestly is a far better all around dog than I deserve or have time for. They have all had there niche and I wouldn’t have trade time with any of them for anything!

Back in the day when I was still hunting quail, my GSP Ginger was my favorite, but in my later years I adopted two Labs, one a silver female & the other a chocolate male. By far, the Labs were the better house dogs/companions, IMO.

My lab hunts upland and waterfowl, blood trails and finds antlers. She does all this without a shock caller. I have seen some great pointers but I have yet to see one that can be controlled without electricity. Really any dog that helps you hunt and improves your chances is great. Except English Setters they are the direct spawn of satan.
