General Youth Elk

My 13 year old son was lucky enough to draw a general youth elk tag. I researched this tag some before putting in and realize that there is wide range of views on this tag. But I feel pretty good about the 4 zones that we have narrowed it down to and hopefully we can get it done. If not we will at least have a great adventure and pics to remember it by. Planning to spend a week checking things out at the beginning of August and then hunt the whole season. He will set his standard on what type of animal he is after. He is pretty head strong at 13 so I just go with this decision. I tired to talk him into shooting a forkie for his 1st buck in Idaho and he held out a few days and got a nice 3 point. So I am sure after scouting and seeing whats out there he will have his mind made up. I would be happy with an elk.
He has been hunting with me for awhile now and I am pretty impressed by him. I have taken with into places most of friends wont go into. I am sure we will be able to get into some good elk areas with a little work. I have not decided yet with we will to a backpack hunt or a base camp. Lots of things to think about.
This will be the 1st year that I document this years hunting season in the 2020 adventure thread.
He is 3 for 3 on bucks and is pretty dang lucky so we will see what happens.
Hunting and fishing has become a huge part of who he is. Pretty cool to see
Look for the thread if you want to follow along.

Thanks

Congrats ! Are your a resident or nonresident ? The more time you spend out in the field before the hunt really helps. The archery hunters will be in the field four weeks before you are.

Non resident so we will have to make the most of our scouting trips. I have 4 main units that we are looking at. The closest will be about a 10hr drive which is not bad. We are use to long drives.

Hopefully will spend a week at the end of July and possible 3-4 days over labor day weekend right before the hunt. Just depends on how the 1st trip goes. I would like to take the week off before the hunt and scout then but the way I have to swing vacation days it wont work. Probably leave Thursday night, set up camp Friday, hunt the full length of season and make the best of it.

My dad is pretty excited and handed down is pre64 308 which he has had since he was 13. Hoping its a great trip for everyone. Since I will be doing most of packing hoping to find a sweet spot 3-5 miles from the nearest road. My son enjoys the whole process so taking an elk in the mountains will be hands down better than taking one from the road.

Thanks
