Moose Sheds

No, there are no moose shed pics in this post. I have found a lot of whitetail, mule and elk sheds over the years in Wyoming. I have even found some deadhead rams while wandering around. My usual technique involves finding them when I am not looking for them. When I lived in North Idaho, I found a lot of moose sheds in checker board clear cuts. They were easier to find than whitetail and elk sheds in deep timber.

I have lived in Wyoming for over 20 years and have found a grand total of two moose sheds. One was up Republic Creek near YNP and the other was South of Jackson in the Hoback country. I have been watching at least three big bull moose for years in the Sunlight Basin/Crandall areas. I have yet to find any of their sheds. These big boys are around, but I am clueless as to where they drop. Any ideas? just wondering...mh

We find a lot of them here in SE Idaho, but not where you would expect. Not where you have seen them all of Sept and Oct. The moose all migrate to wintering areas, and they will be in much bigger groups in those areas. They really like all those open bitter brush slopes where they can bed out in the sunshine. Get a good glassing spot across a draw of canyon, with the sun at your back, and let your eyes do the searching.

Not a very big one, but I found this one out in the desert. Found another one in that area too. I was surprised.

They drop early...as in late November through December.

I've found them in Western Montana anywhere pacific yew was present, they like to eat pacific yew.

Found some in Wyoming but no real pattern I would say. Picked up a good set last year near Flaming Gorge on a juniper covered ridge, no doubt a bedding area.

I have found a grand total of one moose shed in Wyo. It was in late December several years ago while snow machining by my cabin on Hoback Rim. It was in heavy dark timber at 8K feet. This pic is not where I found it. And yes, it is a moose just no palmation.

My in-laws hunt on the lower end of Commissary Ridge and when my kids were very young they would join them in camp for a week. They would find moose sheds in the small aspen pockets on the lower sage country.

hey mightyhunter how about you check your pm box.
But as far as moose sheds I am up to 2 in my lifetime. One was 30 yards from a wolf den. I would rather not say which drainiage but you know which one im talking about. the other one I found was when I was help setting up camp for an outfitter. that clue should tell ya mightyhunter exactly where that is. They came in and found 8 more plus 2 more on the trail before I got in.

lots of moose sheds in the bighorns but they cover up with snow quick and the snow machines get to them first . even in December they are on snow-machines already

Here is my best one mightyhunter.

i also attached my Dads moose in shot with a bow back in 2000. he was 54 inches wide. scored 164 or 168. if his right side had palmation like his left side , and if his his points were long on his left side like his right side cant imagine what it would score. At that time it was number 7 in the state. I know it moved way down the list. I will never forget opening day he was going to shoot bullwinkles grandson. poor bull only had 2 inch palms. the bull got away. last day of archery and 13 miles in the wilderness this big boy stepped out. one shot to boiler house he stood what seemed like 45 minutes in one spot pouring blood out. my dad couldn't shoot again cause his 7 cows kept trying to push. we gutted the moose and headed out. Made it to Phaska pay phone and we called in 6 people to bring horses/mules to help pack out. The moose was buried all but one antler. We had to keep people around the kill site yelling at bears. we counted 13 different bears

Daaaaamn that’s a beast!!! Congrats to your dad!!

While some moose winter low you’d be surprised how many winter high up. Found quite a few in WY at the 8500’ elevation.

I love looking for moose antlers!
