I am looking for recommendations for an outfit that does unguided drop style moose hunts for the 2019 season. The hunt will be for 2-3 men that are in their mis 40's and in good physical shape. Anybody's advice from prior experience would be great.

We used Sportmans Air Service had good luck with Joe Schuster back in 2012. They are pricey but they shoot some big ones. I would def. go back in a heart beat.

I do not have anyone specific to recommend or not recommend, but I cannot emphasize to do a lot of homework on area and pilot, especially when looking for unguided moose drop hunts. A lot of pilots will reserve their high quality areas for either guided hunters or repeat customers.

Wish i could offer more knowledge but its been a long time since I have been in the moose game.

Ben I would agree totally based on my experience with elk guides. I'm quite certain they held back on my archery hunt so as not to disturb the elk before the rifle season. Lots of research is needed but the trouble is its hard to get good Intel.

Thanks

Dorian

Not sure if you have found what your looking for yet. But we have started Drop camp Moose hunts this year on the Koyukuk River south of the Brooks range. I have 5 spots still open for the 2019 season You can check out our website for more details

What about Papa Bear? Anyone have good luck on their DIY drop or float hunts?
Papa Bear has a great reputation, but with that comes limited availability. As I understand it you let them know you're interested and they conduct a lottery to see who gets to book with them.

johnnycake, that's what I found out recently after talking to Aaron at PB. 2022 is the earliest chance with them at this point.

If you want some really good help I would look into talking to Michael Strahan and using his hunt planning service. I did a float hunt for moose and caribou back in 2013 and used him. He was great to work with. We ended up going with Wright Air out of Fairbanks. Awesome pilots! And was hooked up with a great guy that provided raft and camp gear.

I put together a post with it years ago here in the Alaska Forum. Let me see if I can find it in the archives.

Edit: Posted up a new thread so as not to distract from this one.

A friend and I just booked a hunt with Willow Air for 2022. We were very interested in Papa Bear but they told us we'd have to put our names on a list from which they will draw to see who gets to hunt with them in 2023, and the drawing won't happen until Nov 2021. I'm much too impatient for that.

How much is willow air charging per person these days?

Yeah that price tag makes me not feel so upset about how sore my back is from my 1 mile pack out on this year's road system bull!

You get what you pay for with moose. Pappa Bear does great but spend more and kill a bigger moose. Its that simple. They guys who charge $10k and are booked years out......

Supply and demand, I bet they are still booked out a couple years. I have never seen anything like the demand for good moose (AK species). Unreal. I did my hunt in 2019 pricey and a poop ton of work but I got it done. I might never go back because of cost. To many other things - like Africa several species for the same price.
