Nice Utah buck from the '60s

Sure do. That might be why some don't see all that many because they're looking from the truck.

Considering using my general deer points next year.

This is true and some of the better units are some of the easier to draw units right now. I have two points and might be looking for someone to share points with me in a year or two. I decided to sit out this year and scout a new unit that might be a hidden gem. 3TOE, if you're interested, send...

Son's 2023 buck is already to come home from taxidermist.

Just think, if you would have let it live another three years, then Elkass would have had a 40"er to chase.

Son's 2023 buck is already to come home from taxidermist.

Actually, some on this forum only dream of the mighty 40"er but that's an argument for another time. Awesome buck rmanwill and I agree that the monarch mountain team does some really good work. It's not all Curtis though.

    KOLOB OUTFITTERS???

I had a high school friend back in the 80s that would report seeing a 40"er or two each year, along with several 30"ers. Kind of funny how in about 20 years of hunting that area, they only killed one 30" buck.

    KOLOB OUTFITTERS???

I like 40"ers as much as the next guy but I'm just not as obsessed with them as you are.

    KOLOB OUTFITTERS???

They must be interested because of all your talk of 40"ers.😉

Those are some weird looking mule deer.

ANYBODY HEARD WHO PULLED THE ALCATRAZ TAG???

One more thing, I put in for oak creek this year just for you. I wanted to see how bad that unit really has gotten. No such luck drawing a tag though.

ANYBODY HEARD WHO PULLED THE ALCATRAZ TAG???

Probably all that piss poor management. They should cut out the public tag. A 50 percent tag cut, that surely would help. 🙄

ANYBODY HEARD WHO PULLED THE ALCATRAZ TAG???

Th There you go with the 40"er again. Have you ever been officially diagnosed with OCD? I'm guessing probably not but you definitely show all the signs. 🤔

    I'M CALLIN BS!!!

In all fairness, I've never killed a pronghorn myself but I've helped plenty of others on their hunts and they've always been happy with what they've brought home. Not everyone is obsessed with record book animals. Only a very few vocally obsessed are concerned about not enough record book...

    I'M CALLIN BS!!!

You really should look at yourself in the mirror when making statements like this. You're ignoring the fact that most of the pronghorn bucks are hunted during the tail end of the rut and they've already done they're breeding and there's plenty of bucks with the same genetics available to step in...

    I'M CALLIN BS!!!

It's amazing that in one breath you want trophy class animals to be available for the upcoming youth to hunt but then, you want them to only hunt each species maybe once or twice in their lifetime. Thank goodness your type of mindset is very much in the minority.

    Backdoor surprise??

Nothing for me but I wasn't really planning on it anyways. Now I have time to check out some new areas. Win/Win for me.

    I'M CALLIN BS!!!

What you described is not a problem in Utah. Most units are far from being over hunted.

    I'M CALLIN BS!!!

I'd be thrilled to kill an 80" buck and I think most hunters would too. I think that's the whole point on giving more opportunity to the average joe hunter.

That's why they did some studies and followed bucks for several years. The results showed the bucks didn't get much bigger past year three.

Here's info on the real research , if anyone is interested. It's in the pronghorn management plan. It's in the state pronghorn plan. Page 9, section IV. Titled: Use and Demand. I tried to copy and paste or do a screenshot but my phone keeps saying there's a server error and it won't let me do it.

You're actually the one that needs to pay attention. Of course not all reach close to their peak at three but the majority do. There's always a few exceptions.

    I'M CALLIN BS!!!

The DWR are not managing for 2 year old bucks to be harvested. It looks like you suckered into elkass's Kool aid. The data shows in most areas that a 3 year old buck will reach at least 90 percent of his lifetime average score. So why not hunt them before they die of some other cause and never...

I don't mind it the way it is. It seems like a fare way to do it. I've had no problem getting a deer tag every single year since the early 80s.

    Mule Deer Proposal

Here's we go AGAIN, confusing hunter management with deer management. This thread is about hunter management and nothing to do with growing more deer through deer herd management.

    Mule deer decline in Utah

I completely agree. Each unit should be managed for individual needs. It does seem apparent to me that deer crossings are one area that is really lacking in Utah.

    Mule deer decline in Utah

It could be argued that the deer herds were way over objective in the 50s and were bound to crash. Guess what? They did crash, and they have several times over the last 60+ years. There is zero chance of it returning to mirror those days of the 1950s. It's time to move on. I choose to enjoy what...

    Mule deer decline in Utah

There are definitely better hunters out there than what I am. If I can go out on the general rifle just last year and see around 50 bucks and 500 does and fawns between my hunting partner and myself. Just about every doe we saw had fawns. Does that really sound like the end of the deer herd in...

    Mule Deer Proposal

I agree. A lot of people get deer and hunter management all mixed up or they think it's all the same when it's two completely different things. I like things the way they are.
